Florence Nightingale David
Florence Nightingale David was born on August 23rd, 1909 in Irvington, Leominster England. She was named after her parents’ friend, Florence Nightingale. David passed on July 18,1993, in Kensington, California in the United States of America (McDonald, 2015). Florence began her academic life at the age of 5 but the First World War interrupted it. As such, her parents hired a tutor for private lessons at home to prepare her for formal academics. Evidently, from her work, she wrote nine books, two monographs, and over 100 articles that were talking about statistics. Her book on “Games, Gods, and Gambling” is a book that explains the history and origin of probability theory (Billard, & Kafadar, 2015). Because of her contribution to the world of statistics, she was awarded Elizabeth L. Scott award in to congratulate her for the excellent work that she did. Florence received an award because of her effort towards fighting for the rights of women in the faculty of statistics. Historically, women were not allowed to work in certain field like Statistics and Actuarial. However, because of her perseverance and passion for Statistics, she was able to open doors for women who were discriminated in work places and learning institutions. It is known that she contributed much in the faculty of Statistics. For instance, she contributed towards Combinatorics, Correlation Coefficient, and the origin and the history of probability.
