The first reason the story is tragic is because of him loosing his memory rapidly. At the end, he has lost most of his intelligence and memory, and almost is as unintelligent as the beggining. In the beginning, he has a very low iQ. Towards the middle of the story, he has a pretty high IQ. Finally, towards the end of the story, his IQ is dropping like sand through someones hands. This is tragic because he had all this intelligence like he dreamed,
yet he is loosing all of it in a blink of an eye. The second reason the story is tragic is because before Charlie is intelligent, he got made fun of alot by co-workers.He was thought of as stupid and dumb, and he was not treated right. The co-workers made a petition to get him fired and every signed it but one. When Charlie came back, they seemed to treat him right, but it might of been because their boss forced them to treat him right. Finally, they might have only beentreating him right because they saw his intelligence as a human, compared to when he wasn't as intelligent. The counterargument for this might be that he did gain intelligence. Also, another example for a counterargument might be that he did get what he wanted. He did get what he wanted, but he also lost everything he wanted at the same time. Also another argument someone might make would be that he was happy he did contribute to science. He said that he knew he was contributing to science, but he didn't know what he was contributing to. This goes back to when he gained and lost his intelligence. This proves it was a tradgedy and not a happy ending. In conclusion, Charlie was more intelligent at the end then the begining, but this didn't mean the story ended in a happy note. It still ended in a tragedy from a man getting depression and feeling worthless and running away.
