(Opening Device) When you think of fluoride you may think of an ingredient in your toothpaste that prevents cavities. However, studies conducted even decades before have shown that fluoride is an extremely hazardous substance that should be completely avoided. Fluoride has hidden dangers that not enough people know about and should be removed from water supplies despite false reports that it is actually beneficial, and the practice of water fluoridation should be completely eliminated.
(Thesis Statement) Fluoride is an endocrine disruptor that can affect your bones, brain, thyroid gland, pineal gland and even your blood sugar levels.
(Preview of Main Points) In order to explain to you the dangers of fluoride, I will focus …show more content…
on three main points; first, fluoride and bottle fed babies; second, fluoride and reproductive problems; and third, fluoride and brain damage.
Body
Fluoride and Bottle fed Babies
Bottle fed babies receive the highest doses of fluoride.
Since they have a liquid diet, formula fed babies have the highest exposure to fluoride.
Infant exposure to fluoridated water has been repeatedly found to be a major risk factor for developing dental flurosis later in life, according to the health info website, accessed on April 4, 2011.
Choose a better alternative for infant formula.
Dental researchers have recommended that parents of newborns not use fluoridated water when reconstituting formula, explained in an article published in People’s Health Magazine “Society for Fluoride Research”, written by X. Wang, published in 2000.
The American Dental Association (ADS), sent a November 6, 2006 email alert to its members advising that parents should not make baby formula with “fluoridated water”.
Fluoride and Reproductive Problems
The FDA has been conducting scientific research analysis tests on animals.
Fluoride given to animals at high doses destroys the male reproductive system.
Fluoride damages sperm and increases infertility in a number of species, explained in an article published in Animal Wellness Magazine , “Facts about Fluoride”, written by Paul Smith, published in
2006.
Studies conducted; Research Proven
Two studies showed reduced level of circulatory testosterone in males living in high fluoride areas.
A U.S. epidemiological study showed increased rates of infertility among couples living in areas with 3ppm or more fluoride in the water.
Fluoride and Brain Damage
Fluoride alters the brain function.
“It is apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain”, says the National Research Council, in 2006.
Experiments on animals reveal that fluoride accumulates in the brain and alters mental behavior explained on the humane society website accessed in 2012.
An animal experiment found affects at very low doses of fluoride.
In this study rats were fed for one year with 1ppm fluoride in their water (the same amount used in our tap water fluoridation), using either sodium fluoride or aluminum fluoride.
These rats had changes to their kidneys and brains, an increased uptake of aluminum in the brain, and the formation of beta-amyloid deposits which are associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
Conclusion
(Summary) In conclusion, I’ve presented the research I’ve gathered from medical journals and websites that show an overwhelming link between neurological problems and reproductive harm in humans and various animals. While the research suggests negative risks, it’s still important to understand the majority of health organizations like to sugar coat water fluoridation as a health care break through that lowers the risk of cavities. It makes you wonder why the politicians care so much about putting fluoride in our water supply. I however think more resources needs to be invested in fluoride research so we can better understand the negative effects and the process of water fluoridation can end.
(Closing Device) So the next time you’re brushing your teeth, remember there’s a reason you spit it out in the sink and don’t ingest it.
