Thesis: The food supply in America is not safe, because there are unknown ingredients that have caused foodborne illness and food
has been modified.
I. Foodborne Illness
a. Statistics
1. The CDC says foodborne diseases sicken about 48 million Americans each year - one in six of us. About 3,000 people die from
the diseases each year, and 128,000 are hospitalized.
2. Salmonella is one of the most common foodborne pathogens in the United States, causing an estimated 1.2 million infections
per year.
b. Facts
1. Today, foodborne illness has become a recurring issue on the national stage.
c. Examples
1. The CDC said product tests by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture on in-shelf hazelnuts,
by the California Department of
Public Health on mixed nuts that included unshelled hazelnuts, and by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on mixed nuts
that included unshelled hazelnuts all detected
E. coli matching the outbreak strain.
II. Modifications Done To Food
a. Facts
1. Genetic Engineering (GE) or Genetic Modification (GM) of food involves the laboratory process of artificially inserting genes into
the DNA of food crops or animals.
2. Some of the most common genetically engineered ingredients and food companies that use GMO's include corn, soy, cotton,
canola, Kraft, General Mills and Smucker's.
3. GMO contamination is possible due to natural pollen movement, weather events, seed contamination, or human error. b. Examples
1. Sweeteners such as fructose, dextrose, and glucose

a. Pesticides are good for us. They help clean the food we eat.
b. Majority of people agree that food safety is an important issue.
