Essay Prompt: Do you prefer social drama, family drama, or alternative drama? Give an example of the genre you prefer and explain why that genre has contributed so much to twentieth and twenty-first century culture.

Of the various and abundant facets of theatrical productions and genres; one

could assert that family drama has been a crucial catalyst to the growth and change of the social structure in the twentieth and twenty-‐first century. Most assuredly because family drama provides commentary on: the “American Dream”, the individual’s prioritization of family,”, and the impact of family relations on the psyche. To place these concepts into concrete conceptualization, the play The Glass Mengarie, by Tennessee Williams’ will be used. These ideals of the “American Dream”, prioritized family, and psyche that have been formulated through Williams’ work, hold verisimilitude to the way individuals have navigated and continue to navigate through the twentieth and twenty-‐first century.

Background

The Glass Menagerie is one of Williams’ works that exudes the quality of the

genre, family drama. The play is accredited as being William’s first major success and establishing him as renowned American playwright. The play was written in 1944, and

Tennessee Williams begins The Glass Menagerie with a comment by Tom Wingfield, who serves as both narrator of and character within the play: “Yes, I have tricks in my pocket, I have things up my sleeve. But I am the opposite of a stage magician. He gives you illusion that has the appearance of truth. I give you truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion.” In one sentence, Williams has summarized the essence of all drama. To the very end of the play, he maintains a precarious balance between truth and illusion, creating in the process what he contends is the “essential ambiguity of man that I think needs to be stated.” 1 The Glass Menagerie, Tennessee Williams’ first major play to appear on Broadway, is an autobiographical work. In it he delineates several personal and societal problems: the isolation of those who are outsiders for one reason or another, the hardships faced by single mothers, the difficulties a disability may create for a family, and the struggle of a young artist to begin his career. 2 Read The Glass Menagerie (1945) by Tennessee Williams and complete all parts of the assignment below. Tennessee sister Rose was his best friend. Tennessee did not have any friends when he was in school; he always had someone bullying him. His first big success was “The Glass Menagerie”, which is about a struggling family trying to survive after being left by their alcoholic father. The play is based on Tennessee’s life and how his family was in that time. “Tennessee writes from his own tensions” He once said. “For me, this is a form of therapy.” (The American Tradition in Literature 12th Edition Tennessee Williams p.1761) It accepted from him a language often poetic in its intensity, problems checked more by distortions than by faithfulness to actuality, and characters and themes that appear to strike at the truth through the sidelong routes of dream, myth, and nightmare.…

    1. Updike arranges details artfully in order to set the story in a perfectly ordinary supermarket. His description of the appearance of the supermarket itself offers a vivid image. Updike talks about a girl in a bathing suit “in the cool of the A & P, under the fluorescent lights, against all those stacked packages, with her feet padding along naked over our checkerboard green-and-cream rubber-tile floor” (14). This offers the perfect description of a modern supermarket. The way in which Updike describes the three girls walking down the aisles adds to the supermarket image. Updike explains, “The fat one with the tan sort of fumbled with the cookies, but on second thought she put the packages back. The sheep pushing their carts down the aisle” (14). The author adds to the illustration with a description of this consumer, whose approach and actions reflect those of any supermarket customer.…

From having unfulfilled desires to abandoning loved ones, Tennessee Williams encompasses both aspects in his most successful piece of literature that will be examined for generations to come. The struggles of Laura are displayed perfectly by Tom’s memory in respect to her shyness and incapability of forming into society because of a disability yet this play is much more than just finding likely suitors. In The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, the characters Tom and his father are compared with each other in a fight against destiny. Both characters are faced with the struggles of a transitioning South being revolutionized into an industrial movement sweeping the world. Confronted by the same struggles of a typical Southern…

An Elizabethan fool was an inept orator of the obscene given consent to mock and entertain those residing in the King’s court; a definition of the former being a member of a royal court who entertains with jokes and antics, “the Elizabethan fool represents free speech and an un-jaundiced view of a new social fabric” . Relationships between a Fool and his monarch were determined by the boldness of the Fool alongside the King’s tolerance. Fools had a certain amount of comedic licence, often uttering axioms that could be deemed as impertinent. Although Fools have to adhere to certain boundaries (not overstepping the line as far as personal jokes, insulting the monarchy and being over indulgingly crass are concerned), Lear’s Fool seems to overstep…

    F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1920’s novel The Great Gatsby shows that clouded judgments can lead to disappointments and heartbreak. Jay Gatsby, a rich man with a positive outlook, seeks to rekindle the past relationship he once shared with Daisy Buchannan. Refusing to accept that Daisy has already moved on, Gatsby is continuously blinded by the memories they used to share. On the first occasion in 5 years that Gatsby and Daisy have seen each other, Gatsby is extremely disappointed because, “he had been full of the idea so long, dreamed it right through to the end..at an inconceivable pitch of intensity. Now, in the reaction, he was running down like an over-wound clock” (92). Over the past 5 years, Gatsby has created a fantasy involving Daisy. After finally being reconnected, Gatsby is saddened by the fact that she does not live up to the image he has created of her. Gatsby gives Daisy a tour of his house in order to impress her. As the day goes on, it becomes evident that, “There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams- not through her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of is illusion” (95). Although it is not Daisy’s fault, she has fallen short of the expectations Gatsby had for her. His illusions built up over time have begun to fog his apprehension of the differences between reality and appearance. Following the death of Myrtle Wilson, Nick warns Gatsby that he should leave town, but, “He couldn’t possibly leave Daisy until he knew what she was going to do. He was clutching at some last hope” (148). The last bit of hope Gatsby had was the slightest chance that Daisy would leave Tom. Again, his inability to recognize his harsh realities ends up being his downfall. Jay Gatsby, although an optimistic person, also is a very naïve man. Without the ability to accept how things truly are, he becomes very susceptible to heart break and…

At point in my life, this paper would have been easier to write because my issues were easily identifiable. I was a professed Christian who had a hard time forgiving those who hurt me. I would hold grudges against them for long periods of time. However, when I was wrong, I would not apologize but I expected to be forgiving right away. I would always reconcile with the person I offended, but never would I apologize or admit my faults to them. I thought my actions were acceptable because they never seem to end my relationships. I was described as nice and loved by all. People accepted me because my good actions surpassed my bad actions; therefore, I saw no need to change. When I got married, those same skills I developed began to create strife in my home. I didn’t understand the friction because my style worked for me for over 30 years. My husband also fell in love with me because I was nice, caring and loving. The acceptance and love I received form others led me to believe that I was fine and caused me to wonder, what was wrong with my husband. I had a desire to get closer to God but something was hindering me. As I got into my Bible and was prayerful, God used one of my trusted Elders to help me see that I battled with a spirit of pride that caused me to be critical, selfish, and manipulative along with plenty of other ugly things.…
