History

Inventors invented the football helmet to prevent head injuries. One of the rarest and first

leather football helmet Circa 1903. Soft very thin leather, very thin padding. They were the first types of

helmets used for football. They were the only means of head protection until after world War II. Soft

leather helmets where first used until the 1930s. Then they made them with hard leather that better

protected the head. Helmet designs improved over the years by adding more padding and a strap. The

leather helmets phased out due to using such minimal equipment. (Goodier, 2013)

In the 1930s they added a face mask to the leather football helmet. The football helmet is a

piece of protective equipment mainly used for American’s
