The new rules in the National Football League are changing the way the game is being played and the way it affects the players. One of the many ways it affects the players is benefiting their health, and that’s why most of the new rules are added into the NFL. There is an average of 128 concussions per year and about nine concussions per week. There are positive ends and negative ends of the whole situation that can make the game boring for the players and also the spectators. This also makes the game safer for the players in their long-term life from their kids to their own health. The NFL could be changing for the better, or for the worse of it.…
“Pro football is like nuclear warfare. There are no winners, only survivors.” -Frank Gifford. Football is a full contact sport, so it is not supposed to be safe, and no one ever expected it to be safe. Recently the effects of countless head injuries endured by players many years ago had just started to surface. The NFL has started to attempt to make professional football as safe as they possibly can without ruining the game. The majority of the rules the NFL has in place are necessary when it comes to how the game is played and maintaining the safest environment on the football field for the players, however some of the other rules being added to the rulebook are arguably unnecessary and truthfully ridiculous. Players are more often than not…
Concussions cause the dangerous disease CTE that has already claimed the lives of many athletes in the NFL and in other sports. We are doing research on CTE but a lot more needs to be done. If the NFL is going to be safer they need to relinquish all of their information and research on player brain injuries. Some good things are being done to rule changes to make the game safer, but it is still not enough. There is a fine line however between changing rules and changing the game, which the NFL will have to navigate carefully. One of the better answers to these brain injuries is to improve the helmet protecting the head. Many developers have made ingenious new ideas to combat the concussion epidemic in football. It is up to the NFL to adopt the new innovations to the football helmet to drastically improve player safety. A person’s brain is the most important part of the body. It just makes sense to want to protect it as much as possible. As the public becomes more aware of the dangers football has on a player’s brain people may reconsider playing football. If the NFL is going to have a future, they must make their game safer. If people see less players effected by concussions on TV public perception of football will improve. Something clearly needs to be done to combat these serious health problems facing current and past NFL…
We all know the classic NFL(National Football League). It is certainly fun to watch, but how to the players feel when they play? Football concussions are a big deal when it comes to mental and physical stability. NFL players may be able to sustain through concussions and pain (even though it is a bad thing to ignore), but teenagers, on the other hand, shouldn’t try to fight the pain. High schools should not be able to run football teams knowing the dangers of the sport. Teenagers are more susceptible to get life-threatening brain damage from a concussion. Not only can football cause concussions, it can cause pain or permanent damage in other places of the human body.…
Football plays a great part in the United States. It is a part of our culture and is a part of the atmosphere in the fall when school is about to start. It is an amusing experience for a lot of people and their families. This is what make football a part of our culture. One thing to actually think about though is what is essentially happening to the children, the young adults, and athletes involved in this sport; they are growing older then, attending college or even playing professional football with head injuries. Understanding that in football there are many collisions of the head to somebody else’s head or other body parts. Although, the brain sits inside of a cranial vault, also known as the skull. Even wearing the best equipment…
I agree that football is a dangerous sport. In football you can get tackled. You can also get a bad concussion. You can also have lingsp term effect.…
History, science, momentum, present and future. The NFL may be the most dangerous sport to play in the United States. I mean, where else do two people that can run at speeds of 30 miles an hour, hit each other head on going full speed? Nowhere. The game of football, especially at the higher levels, is becoming increasingly dangerous as the athletes keep getting bigger, faster, and stronger. Until a couple years ago the research of concussion and helmet safety have both been on hold.…
Football is one of America’s most beloved sports and with the super bowl coming up; fans of the sport are getting ready for the big game. I am an avid football fan myself and love playing it as much I enjoy watching it. What I have come to notice recently, is how the lives of football players are drastically changed when they are off the field. Football is a full contact sport, if you’re not prepared or unprotected at any given time during a play, you could end up limping off the field nursing injuries or even leave the game on a stretcher.…
Researchers believe that there is only one way to diagnose a patient claiming of having Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. This brain disease can only be diagnosed post mortem. Meaning the the victim would have to be diseased or dead in order for them to inspect their brain. This is because in order for them to find the protein called tau, they have to slice different parts of different sections or lobes of the brain tissue into many individual slices so it can be carefully examined underneath the lens of a microscope. Stories like michael Webster's is one of many hundreds of cases of CTE. Webster’s case was just the first. A great defensive player named junior Seau. Junior was a linebacker in the NFL. He was known for his passionate playing style and ability to hit hard. He was a ten time All-Pro, a 12 time Pro Bowler, and named to the NFL 1990s All-Decade player. On May 2nd 2012 the Hall of Fame linebacker shot himself in the chest at age 43. He did this so that Scientist could look at his brain so that they could get a better understanding of CTE. After several examinations and studies Jr. Seau tested positive for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. The list of ex-NFL players keeps growing…

First described in the year 1928 (McKee 2010), Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that has been found to be the cause of retired NFL linebacker Junior Seau’s suicide. The disease deteriorated his brain and hindered his ability to think logically. Seau is not the only retired NFL player found to have had CTE through autopsy following their death. Mike Webster was the first football player found to have CTE, when scientists found the characteristic buildup of the tau protein in his brain. Another significant…
In youth and high school football, many injuries are suffered every year. Some injuries are just painful spots on the body, such as contusions, breaks, and sprains. Other injuries may be catastrophic and sometimes even deadly. State laws in WV now require players to take concussion tests yearly before seasonal play begins, but the question some may ask is, is just one test a year enough?…

From MMA to football many sports at the professional level boast incredible injury rates almost as if they are trying to compete with each other. The biggest of course, is football, which has many stories every year about traumatic brain injuries leading to many serious injuries. One of the biggest cases in the past 6 years was the case of Jovan Belcher in 2012. Belcher was a Kansas City Chiefs linebacker who killed his girlfriend and then himself found in his autopsy to have had serious brain injuries leading up to the homicide and suicide. Another case in 2011 was very similar with former Chicago Bears player Dave Duerson who shot himself in the chest to preserve his brain for studying in a last act of knowingness of what he was going through. These 2 cases have not been a minority however, as according to studes on PBS.org 87 out of 91 deceased NFL players had serious traumatic brain injuries leading up to there deaths. While football is the biggest offender overall some sports beat it out in terms of pure brain injuries. The one that does by a wide margin is the MMA and all it’s incredible amount of head and brain injuries (PBS Page…
Many studies have indicated that the NFL is a common place for concussions. The logic behind this argument is that football is a contact sport which means that heads are always smashed every game, every week. In this case, every game players experience kicks and blows on their heads. The prevalence of concussions in the league has continued to rise despite various efforts to rule by the NFL to prevent concussions (Teramoto et al. 6). Many concussions are continuing to be reported despite the introduction of helmets and fines against teams that bend the protocols of concussions.…
