Essay On High School Football Injuries
In youth and high school football, many injuries are suffered every year. Some injuries are just painful spots on the body, such as contusions, breaks, and sprains. Other injuries may be catastrophic and sometimes even deadly. State laws in WV now require players to take concussion tests yearly before seasonal play begins, but the question some may ask is, is just one test a year enough? Personally, I am a strong supporter of children playing any sport that is offered. With that being said, young lives are too precious to many people for us to lack in safety precautions, especially in a violent contact sport such as football. According to youthsportssafetyalliance.org, there are nearly 3 times as many catastrophic injuries per year in high school football as there are in collegiate level football. This number infers that high school football tends to be more dangerous, and for several reasons.
In youth and high school sports, not only are athletes’ bodies not fully developed yet, but neither are their skills. A lot of football “players” in high school and youth leagues, actually have no athletic ability at all, and therefore tend to do things that aren’t mechanically correct. Poor mechanics in tackling on the football field are very dangerous. Concussions and broken bones should be the least of our worries when a not so athletic

Players know the risks they are taking, and while the administration of leagues and franchises should do their best to make the game safer, and protect football players, players themselves have to be held accountable as well for practicing proper techniques, and preparing their bodies with training. Therefore, in my opinion, I strongly believe that high school football should always be a part of cities, states and the whole country. It is a game that teaches character, and life lessons, and benefits our society in ways that no one really

Everyone who wrote in knew the dangers of football, and agreed that it was in fact a very dangerous game. They also agreed that taking tackling out would be an awful idea; their reasoning was that if they took out the tackling then later on it will only hinder any of their possible football related careers. Every person who wrote in weighed in on the importance of having a properly educated and trained coach who will teach proper technique to all of his players. Football is an inherently flawed sport. It calls upon men to sacrifice their bodies and minds by using their heads as battering rams over and over again. In his Offensive Play, a 2009 article in the New Yorker, Malcolm Gladwell explains “much of the attention in the football world, in the past few years, has been on concussions—on diagnosing, managing, and preventing them—and on figuring out how many concussions a player can have before he should call it quits. But a football player’s real issue isn’t simply with repetitive concussive trauma. It is, as the concussion specialist Robert Cantu argues, with repetitive subconcussive trauma. It’s not just the handful of big hits that matter. It’s lots of little hits, too (Gladwell).” There is no extricating the thousands of little hits from football.…

Americans all over the U.S. are devoted to football and enjoy watching this sport, with the hopes of seeing an intense game between two teams. The two teams are tasked with rushing the other and ramming them into the ground. As a result of the incredible speed at which the players collide, unconsciousness and concussions sometimes occur. Football is regarded as the toughest sport, played by kids, High schoolers, and professionals. After all this, I would let my son play football because I believe it builds character, keeps kids out of gangs, and shows kids how to work in a team.…

Statistics show that 33% of all football related concussions occur during practice, not during the game (“Sports”). These practice related concussions can be prevented in two ways including restricted full speed head on blocking and tackling drills, and limited contact time during practice. Currently, most coaches are allowing their athletes to undergo full tackling drills in which the athletes tackle each other running at high speeds. This is partially necessary to practice game-like situations, but if players are beginning to learn how to tackle, most will not know where and how to place their head and shoulder on the opponent. With that and the factor of sprinting full speed, the risk of a head injury is huge. To prevent this, the tackling and blocking drills should begin with the players at a maximum of three yards apart, providing the game-like feel, without giving the chance for the athletes to smash into one another as hard as possible. The second way to prevent concussions during practice is limiting contact time. Instead of having full contact drills throughout the whole length of practice, cutting it down to one half of the time will give less time for the injuries to occur. There are many football drills such as practicing against a ghost defense and passing drills which require minimal contact. Some could even take away…

“Mommy, I want to be just like him. I want to wear a cool uniform just like him. And I want to throw and catch passes just like him.” These are the words of a young child watching professional sports, always wanting to grow up to be just like the professional athlete he is seeing. With professional sports players being such huge role models to kids these days, everything that a player does is watched over by young learning eyes. Kids see how they act, how they celebrate a touchdown, even… how they are hit. With concussions in youth football turning into such huge issues including safety and prevention the National Football League is one that has been stepping up to take its own changes. The NFL has always endorsed safety with youth programs and encouraging concussion prevention, but with football being such a physical sport it begs the question of, “Is it worth it.” With the NFL being one of the most prominent outlet to youth, the handling of issues such as concussion needs to be handled properly in order to send a positive message to youth.…

Football is under attack these days because people think it’s too dangerous and parents are starting to not let their kids play at a young age. To me if you don’t start them young they won’t be ready when they get older and they won’t know anything about it. Another reason is because if you start them off young you can figure out if they like the sport or not because you shouldn’t force them to play it should be their choice. One final reason is because if you start them off young they will get better and stronger by the time they get to middle school and high school and they would play a lot better than they would have if their first time playing was in high school. I believe that parents should start their kids off playing football at a young age.…
