It is no surprise that football is, in fact, very dangerous but that’s just apart of the game. The players who choose to participate in the sport do it on their own behalf. No one is forcing them. They know the dangers and what could happen. There are many sports out there that have the potential to cause serious injuries to a person. Now putting aside injuries, football, in the long run, can be very beneficial. Many kids turn to sports to help them socialize and keep in good shape. Now whether it’s a very physical sport like football or a non-contact sport like golf is up to them. As stated in the article “In Defense of Football” “football can provide an invaluable lesson in team effort, hard work and discipline, along with a sense of camaraderie that can last a lifetime.” Sports in general is something that people all around the world use to get away from the stresses of life. The article “Ten Steps to Make the Game Safer” has mentioned multiple steps to do this such as requiring more equipment, making mouthguards mandatory, eliminating kickoffs, etc. To jump to extremities like ending the sport all in all is arbitrary. More thought and effort should be put in to help prevent these potential injuries. For example, more medical training could be given to coaches so they know how to react in a situation where someone has been given an injury. Another step to be taken is for additional rules as to how you can hit another player, along with side training on how to hit a player without causing injury. Medical advances could also be applied. Concussion tests have been mandatory among players as young as high school, therefore more precautionary steps could be added to prevent injuries.
Although I believe football should not be banned, it is understandable as to why it is dangerous. Recently a lawsuit has been filed from 4,000 previous NFL players. As well as another suit from a group of former college players. Both suits stated that concussions were not taken as seriously as it should have been.
