Most people will say that contact sports are safe because they require helmets and pads all over the body. But in reality the helmets and pads you wear in the sport only protect so much. From recent research, it is said that on average “high school football players suffered 11.2 concussions for every 10,000 games and practices” (Jason M. Breslow). Although, this amount is underrated due to the problem of kids not reporting their head injuries to coaches or parents.
Another reason kids should start contact sports later in life is because the most important stages of brain development happen within the ages of 10 to 12 years of age. In a recent study from Boston University School of Medicine ¨42 former NFL players between the ages of 40 and 69 and found that those who began playing football before age 12 ´demonstrated significantly greater impairment´ than the players who did not start playing until after that age¨ (Waldron).
