Forbidden Love In A Midsummer Night Dream
Forbidden love can travel all the way back to Shakespeare and not just our daily lives in 2018. The three loves stories of Hermia and Lysander, Titania and Bottom and Pyramus and Thisbe shows the reader that love is not always a given and sometimes you have to fight for it. In A Midsummer night dream, William Shakespeare shows us ways that something can get in the way of love.

The first couple that falls in love is, Hermia and Lysander, even though something is stopping them they still fight for each other. For example, “Egeus: Full of vexation come I, with complaint, Against my child, my daughter Hermia.— Stand forth, Demetrius.—My noble Lord, This man hath my consent to marry her.—Stand forth, Lysander.—And, my gracious duke, This man hath bewitched the bosom of my child” (1.1.23-28). This shows that Hermia and Lysander are forbade to date from Egeus, Hermia’s father who will go to extreme lengths to get his daughter to follow his commands. This is because, Egeus already made

Their love is forbidden by society, for example, “Bottom: Methinks, mistress, you should have little reason for that. And yet, to say the truth, reason, and love keep little company together nowadays. The more the pity that some honest neighbors will not make them friends. Nay, I can gleek upon occasion. Titania: Thou art as wise as thou art beautiful” (3.1.144-150). This shows that Bottom knows that society will never accept them as a couple so he tries to tell Titania that their love will never work amongst their friends and the rest of the world. This is because he is a low-class workman in Athens, who just happens to have the head of an ass and she is a high-class fairy citizen being the queen of the fairies. As a result, the couple broke up, but not just due to society, Puck took the spell off of Titania, making her fall back in love with

The artist Richard Serra, in 1981, installed his sculpture, Tilted Arc, in the Federal Plaza in New York City. Even though the piece had been commissioned by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), the Arts-In-Architecture program, it immediately caused controversy. In 1963, the GSA established the Arts-In Architecture program to make ½ of 1% of a federal building’s cost to be spent on public art. The point of this program was to enhance public spaces and to expand the public’s awareness of contemporary art by installing artworks created by contemporary U.S. artists.…

In Shakespeare's play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, I learned that relationships are tested in situations with drastic outcomes. For example, a scene occurs where Egeus is angry at his daughter Hermia for wanting to marry someone without his consent (22). Egeus then threatens to kill Hermia if she didn't marry Demetrius, the man he gave his consent to. This relates back to the theme because Egeus put his father-daughter relationship on the line so he could get his way. As Egeus said "As she is mine I may dispose of her," meaning he is willing to let his daughter die rather than allow her to marry freely. Another example of this theme occurring is when Helena accuses Hermia of partaking in a prank where Hermia's lovers taunt her (106-107). Helena…

In the play a Midsummer Night's Dream written by William Shakespeare, there are many lovers that are drawn to each other in various ways. One can fall in love at any age. The definition of love is a deep affection for someone or something. In the Shakespeare's play the three pairs of lovers encounter issues where Oberon instructs Puck to sprinkle "love juice" on an Athenian man's eyes. However, he did it to the wrong man, and the other lovers started turning on their loved ones and showing love and affection for another; in Titania's case it was an ass. While reclining with Titania, Bottom states the quote," reason and love keep little company nowadays". This quote is very significant to how love worked in the play and even in normal teenage life today. The quote is greatly signified by Garrett and Caroline, who both liked each other in high school but could not find reason of why.…

As Helena says, "Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind" (1.1.234) whereas in the play, most of the relationships of love is seen with the eyes rather than their minds. The characters don’t realize what reason they are falling in love with and only see what they want to see. William Shakespeare writes and demonstrates the effect of love through the character's eyes in his play A Midsummer Night's Dream. Shakespeare establishes the illusion of love through the relationships between Lysander & Hermia, Demetrius & Helena, and Bottom & Titania.…

Demetrius is more of a cold soul, but that is transfigured in the final bits of the play, and Lysander is the hopeless romantic of the play. He spoils Hermia with little knacks and treats and even sings to her at her window sill in the night “Thou hast by moonlight at her window sung/ With faining voice verses of feigning love[...]” (1,1:31,32). Though it is quite obvious that the two men are tremendously different, there also are some similarities, more so near the end of the play as opposed to the beginning/middle. Both men find a partner in which they marry. In the final act, Lysander and Demetrius lock away their differences, and resolve the conflict between the…

Shakespeare was pointing out that love is maddening and that people do very eccentric things for love. In the play A Midsummer night’s dream written by Shakespeare, the characters portray the quote written by John Lennon, ‘All you need is love’ in multiple ways. To some extent the quote is relatable and to some extent it is not. In the play, there is tension between love and law, thus, four lovers escape into the magic forest, while problems arise in the forest between Oberon, the king of fairies, and Titania, the queen of fairies. Oberon’s most trusted servant, Puck (Robin Goodfellow) uses magic juice to play tricks, to entertain his master, by mocking the power of love.…

This type of love exists as a form of agreement usually to present surrender or to keep “noble blood” through marriage of the same upper class. Firstly, the interaction and dialogue between Theseus and Hippolyta is very bland and not energetic (examples can be shown through any type of dialogue between Theseus and Hippolyta during act 5) . Nevertheless, one can assume that they are built on the foundation of “noble love”. According to internet sources; Hippolyta decided to marry Theseus as a sign of surrender and defeat when their two nations were fighting to the point where the Athenians defeated the Amazon nation. Oberon and Titania nearly have the same concept in terms of love. Both are King and Queen and married each other to keep their important…

The history associated with drug criminalization in America contains more political motivators than concerns for public health and safety. The biggest politically motivated aspect to drug deterrence comes from Richard Nixon’s s war on drugs in 1971 which has created a system that discriminates against minority groups and has had little effect on deterring drug use. The war on drugs has thus far been notoriously noted for discriminating against people of color by pumping drugs into their communities and then imposing severe criminal consequences for drug possession, use, or distribution. In fact, one of Nixon’s aides John Ehrlichmen stated that the war on drugs was intended for the following:…

As Lysander says, "The course of true love never did run smooth." Love in A Midsummer Night's Dream is portrayed as complicated and difficult, yet Shakespeare does it in a way that is humorous and lighthearted. In this play love often brings out the worst in people, yet in the end it's what brings everyone back together. Love has the ability to spellbind people as Shakespeare represents symbolically through Puck's actions, and we see how intensely complicated it can be when it nearly tears apart Hermia's family and causes argument between the four main human characters. The four types of love, forced love, parental love, romantic love and complicated love permeate all aspects of life in this play and we see the awesome power it has over human emotion, psychology, and behavior.…
