'Forever' By James Hurst: A Literary Analysis
“Forever” written by Paul Jennings and “The Scarlet Ibis” written by James Hurst are two sad stories. Both stories are about mentally and physically disabled children that ends in an unfortunate way. A brother lost in each story leaving behind a grieving family. The stories although similar have multiple differences. One difference is that Brother tried to change who Doodle was. He pushed Doodle really hard, at first to walk and then other things, like learning how to swim. On the other hand, in the story “Forever” Tim accepted Richard for who he was. Although Tim had a different perspective because he was also disabled, so his point of view was different than Brother’s. Brother was normal and a little kid, he just wanted a normal brother to do things fun things with. Another difference between the two stories is that in “Forever” Tim’s death was expected, the …show more content…
Though their intentions are not the same they both help their brothers. In addition to that in both “The Scarlet Ibis” and “Forever” they both have places where they frequently hang out. In “Forever” Richard hangs out in the loft all of the time, he loves it. Then in “The Scarlet Ibis” both Brother and Doodle hang out at the Old Woman Swamp. Which is where brother teaches Doodle how to do a lot of things like walk and swim. One last similarity is that in both stories a brother dies, leaving the other brother sad and lost. In “The Scarlet Ibis” Doodle dies during a horrible storm after a long day of Brother pushing his limits. Doodle died from his heart exploding. In “Forever” Tim dies from putting too much strain on his heart. His heart is strained because he refused to give up looking for his brother, and because of this Richard is alive. Tim did die but he died because he saved a life, it was a sacrifice he was willing to

“The Scarlet Ibis” is a very interesting story. There are two main characters. One is the older brother. Then there is his little brother Doodle. In the story Doodle is supposed to be a special sign because he was born in a caul. He got his name because instead of crawling forward when he was a baby he would turn around and back up. Doodle’s worst fear was for his brother to leave him. Later they would go to the swamp and the older brother would pick Doodle up and “make” him stand. At the end of the story they find a scarlet ibis in a tree and it falls down and dies, then Doodle buries it. After they go to the swamp and on the way home a storm comes, doodle falls but the brother keeps running and when he goes back for Doodle he finds Doodle dead.…

Wow! What wise insight you have provided with terrific textual evidence which points to the underlying biblical allusion I did not initially pick up on. To answer your second answer, my observations lead me to agree with the latter of the answers. Sykes exclaim, "Ah done tole you time and again to keep them white folk' clothes outa dis house" (Hurston 564). The context of the story puts Hurston's writing during a time of infamous oppression against the African American community. Therefor, Hurston evokes Jesus' act of washing of the sins of the world as she washes the clothes of those that gone against her. Like wise, while our sins are against Christ, he still served us by washing our eternal garments white like the clothes Delia prepares.…

The author’s purpose for 'A&P' is; to inform that there is a limit to how we should go to help others. The author’s purpose for 'My Brother’s Keeper' is also; There is a limit someone should go to help others, even if that person means a lot to you. The author’s purpose of A&P is very similar to my brother’s keeper only because there is a limit to helping others especially depending on how drastic the situation is. I personally wouldn't have wanted to help Ted even if he was my brother because he's going against my own values & well eventually Ted needs to grow up. Both audiences of the stories are teenagers because eventually you have to start to grow up & take responsibility for your actions. Whereas Ted depended on his brother to help him out. Sammy made a stupid decision by quitting for some girls, when he knows his parents need that extra money that he's making. The significance of both titles are very different because most of the A&P story takes place in the A&P. In My brother’s keeper, that title has nothing t do with the setting it almost just tells what happens in the story and not about where it takes place. Ted and Sammy are very similar because they both made bad decisions, but Ted is rich, he can support himself but Sammy needs to work just to support his family’s needs. The manager of The A&P and Uncle Harry are very similar too because there both just trying to support and do what’s best for Jamie & Sammy. Quennie relates a lot to Carmody because they both think there better than everyone else and there big snobs. The settings of both stories are very different; in My brother’s keeper they have 3 settings (Carmody's Office, Court & Uncle Harry's house). In the A&P only takes place in the A&P. The time zone however is about the same i think they both take place around the 1960-1965's. The story in general is almost the same because Sammy, Ted & Jamie all do something that they'll regret.…

To sum up, the two short stories are relevant to each other, since both have the characteristic of eagerness to learn, in which they encountered many challenges and struggled to acquire the idiom of writing. They overcame their obstacles by motivation and persuasion. In the event that, Keller had greater disadvantage than Baca, she was able to acquire the knowledge of writing. Her process of learning was very painful and slow. On the other hand, being an orphan, you don’t have no one to rely on.
