Forgiveness in Religion
Jordan Smith

The research topic I chose to write my paper on is forgiveness and what influences it has in the Christian faith. I have decided to explore the term forgiveness from a minister’s perspective, meaning I have been sitting down discussing and looking for specific scriptures regarding the actions and lessons of forgiveness with my mom and sisters. I founding this process to be very interesting and surprising being that the bible is so old, but I’m realizing a lot of the wisdom it shares is so timeless. Another aspect of exploration I plan on taking is interviewing a pastor in my neighborhood. Her name is Pastor Sally and she and her husband go back and forth ministering at the congregation. I choose her because I wanted a female’s perspective just to get a different point of view, which will hopefully give me a closer look at the topic forgiveness. I plan on asking on her at least 5-10 questions although I have I have yet to come up with the questions, but I know I want I want to get a little personal with it being that I want to get as honest as possible in my interview without stepping on any toes. My second source I plan on looking into from a philosophical standpoint is a book given to me from Pastor Sally called forgiveness written by Carl Reinhold Brakenhielm. It was recommended because of the extensive amount of work he put into, he even looks at forgiveness from a political point of view, which is something I’m looking forward to. But to get the most out of my topic Pastor Sally and I are scheduling a time where we can really examine the bible so that I can get the most out of the scriptures regarding forgiveness. But to answer the next question the only problem I’m having in the process is my bad habit of procrastinating, I don’t know why but I am founding it very hard to get motivated to do this project. Maybe because I’m atheist and religion really doesn’t factor into my life, but whatever the reason maybe I can honestly say I really

Being raised in a Roman Catholic household, I can tell you when it comes to forgiveness I was taught to do the Christian thing. As hard is it might be, I should find it in my heart to forgive those who have hurt me, whether they ask for forgiveness or not. What I had never pondered is the chance that someone might ask me forgiveness for something wrong they have done to someone else. Do I have the right to put them at ease or offer forgiveness? In the book The Sunflower, Simon Wiesenthal, a man who had watched countless of innocent Jews like himself be murdered because of sheer hate, shares his unique story. One that has made me think about the way I view, and use forgiveness.…

Despite all the mistakes a person makes shouldn’t forgiveness always be achievable? Kit forgave many people in her life, she forgave her father even after everything he put her through. Kit forgave her mother for not trying hard enough and she forgave many people that entered her life and made mistakes as well. In the novel “Baygirl” by Heather Smith the theme is that there is always room for forgiveness.…

“The Church as Forgiving Community: An Initial Model,” by Chad M. Magnuson and Robert D. Enright is a research article based on the study of forgiveness. This article guides the reader through steps on how to work towards forgiveness as an individual, through the church, and into the community, and also how to then sustain the forgiving community that has been built through this forgiveness education. Magnuson and Enright propose a three-tiered holistic psycho-educational approach to forgiveness education called “The Forgiving Communities.” They state, “The goal of The Forgiving Communities is to deepen individuals’ (and society’s) understanding and personal practice of, and growth in forgiveness”. The model consists of multiple levels of forgiveness education that starts with the senior pastor and works its way down through the church leaders, lay volunteers, and eventually into the entire congregation. The main point of this article is how to train the church community to install and sustain Enright’s process model on forgiveness. With this is the hope that the forgiveness education would trickle down to the children and give them the tools they need to confront injustices in a healthy way into adulthood.…

As human beings we are often reluctant to let go of our anger and unwilling to forgive others. This becomes especially true in the case of loved ones or family members. The poem, “How Do We Forgive Our Fathers?,” written by Dick Lourie, addresses the different dilemmas associated with a child forgiving his/her father. In his six-stanza poem, the poet discusses how a child should forgive their father for traumatic events imposed on the child. This includes reasons for forgiveness, appropriate time to forgive, and whether or not to even forgive at all. Detailed through the different stanzas, the poem suggests that until one learns how to appropriately forgive another for wrongful behavior, they will never be able to let go of resentment and find inner peace.…

If someone doesn’t feel remorse for their actions, should they be forgiven? In The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells, Griffin hurts many people as he fights for the power he believes he deserves. The decisions Griffin makes throughout this book impact those around him hurtfully, and Griffin’s adamant lack of remorse when confronted with the consequences of his actions show that he is not to be forgiven for making these choices. If he had shown remorse for his decisions, that would make us more willing to forgive him, because he regrets it, and is more likely to not repeat his actions. Griffin, however, shows no regret from start to finish, and this makes him unworthy of our forgiveness. Since Griffin has shown no signs of remorse while abusing his invisibility, he is past the point of redemption.…

During the reformation Martin Luther thought that it was vital to make immediate changes to many aspects of the Roman catholic church. In the 16th century when an individual committed an immoral act they were to buy an indulgence. An indulgence was something that allowed the sinner to purchase forgiveness for their sins whether they were committed in the past, present or future. Although Martin Luther was strongly against this as it was of his belief that it “clouded the biblical message” of forgiveness and repentance. He believed that individuals that have sinned should not have been able to just buy forgiveness but instead earn it by being reconciled and truly being sorry for the sin. Throughout this period the priests of the catholic put…

    Restorative Justice

Three major themes that we have talked about so far are where can we find/see God, the beneficial effects of restorative justice, and helping a cause not only for the effects of charity, but also for the effects of justice. First, in class, we talked about how we can find and see God in the Biblical foundations and in the Sacraments. Many of us discussed our “images of God”. For me, my image of God is on a very personal level. Although I have only ever attended Catholic school for my entire life, I wouldn’t identify “my God” with all of the confined and contradictory teachings and doctrines of the church. For example, we can see God’s grace and goodness in the Gospel in the parable concerning the slaves and…
