Forgiveness is a teaching Jesus would preach about endlessly. He knew the importance of letting go of grudges and thought that forgiving is the best remedy. That is why he included forgiveness in the Beatitudes: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy” (Singer-Towns 20.) Through my actions of not living the Beatitudes by holding grudges, Jesus’ teachings have given me an understanding of how to act and most importantly, how to forgive. Forgiveness can be hard, especially if someone is hurt, but through faith in Jesus and the knowledge and benefits that forgiveness can bring you, anyone can live a life according to the Beatitudes.
I have never been one to hold grudges on others, but one incident with my sister changed my view during that time. One particular moment comes to mind when I think about the Beatitudes from Jesus. My sister and I were around 6 years old and for Christmas, we both received dress-up costumes. My sister received a Minnie Mouse dress and I received a pretty pink fairy costume. We absolutely loved them, and you could not get us out of the fun costumes. With God’s grace working through and in us, I can live a holy life according to the Beatitudes. I can accept my fault in holding an unnecessary grudge and forgive my sister while God works his grace through my actions and words. God’s grace can enable us to become the people he calls us to be and allows us to live a new lifestyle according to the Beatitudes. God’s grace frees us from our sin; however, that does not mean that we should take advantage of God’s grace.
