This is when an informal meeting is ideal. One benefit of an informal assessment would be on a new project or teaching of a new skill, this allows the manager to hold a quick chat to correct, instruct, or complement the employee in a timely manner. Another benefit of informal meetings is to build trust between manager and employee. For example if I have an underperforming employee who is earnestly trying however is finding some areas of the work difficult, an informal quick meeting on how what he can do to improve his performance will be best. This will ease some pressure off the employee as well as help the employee to feel as if they can come to me for assistance if “stuck” in a situation.
