Choke
A form of restraint used to subdue overactive, unruly, violent or inebriated subjects to prevent them from harming themselves or others. This consists of occluding the upper airway by compressing the thyroid cartilage. This can lead to death or unconsciousness.
Manual strangulation
This is when one or both hands are used around a person’s neck. One of the classic signs is a broken hyoid bone in the throat. Manual strangulation victims will have bruises around the neck as well as scratches where they have fought to remove the hands of the attacker. It is estimated that extreme pressure is needed to strangle a person unconscious. Compression on the jugular vein causes lack of oxygen to the brain; therefore, the victim loses consciousness and may even die if done for a long period.
Autoerotic Asphyxiation
Autoerotic asphyxiation (AEA) is the practice of cutting off the blood supply to the brain through self-applied suffocation methods while masturbating. By limiting the blood supply to the brain, AEA can induce cerebal anoxia, a deficiency of oxygen in the brain. Oxygen deficiency in the brain is thought to intensify sensations producing feelings of giddiness, light-headedness or exhilaration that can heighten the orgasmic experience. It is also possible that the helplessness and self-endangerment inherent in the AEA enhance sexual gratification in some people. Of course, the same self-endangerment that may provide a thrill to the person
