I have always loved fossils, and the discovery of what the fossils bring to us today, so I thought I would find out some information about fossils. I found an article about fossils and penguins. I love penguins and find them unique and interesting.
Australia has a fossil record of penguins as far back as the Eocene period, which is the second Epoch period of the Tertiary period, between Paleocene and Oligocene Epochs which is 33.9 to 56 million years ago. That is a very long time ago, but today Australia is inhabited by just one breeding species, called Eudyptula minor. (Park, Fitzgerald, Gallagher, & Tomkins, 2016)
Penguins live in cold climates, so I was wondering why some of the
species lived in Australia which is not a very cold climate. I learned that the Eocene time period started from the end of the Paleocene Epoch to the beginning of the Oligocene Epoch, which means, during that time period, the climate of Australia started with the warmest climate and ended with the icehouse climate. (Park, Fitzgerald, Gallagher, & Tomkins, 2016)
The separation of Australia from Antarctica during the Palaeogene period, and its subsequent drift north, made is so the penguins left Australia and migrated to Antarctica where the weather was colder. It sounds like there were many different species during the time period of the Epoch’s, but today there are only a few species of penguins and they live in the colder parts of the world, not Australia.
