Four Parenting Styles: Authoritarian, Permissive, And Uninvolved

“Diana Baumrind has identified four parenting styles: authoritarian, permissive, authoritative, and uninvolved” (Benokraitis 339). This paragraph will discuss authoritarian and permissive parents. Authoritarian parents “are often demanding, rigid, and punitive” (Benokraitis 339). They expect their children to be obedient and use forceful phrases to control their behavior. These caregivers do not provide children with warmth and support. “Children from these homes are often irritable, belligerent, and hyperactive” (Benokraitis 339). Permissive parents are the opposite because they are warm and supportive. Their children are not required to behave orderly or complete household tasks. Adolescents raised in permissive “households are often less mature, less responsible, and less able to assume leadership positions in adulthood” (Benokraitis 340). Furthermore, the other two types of parenting are authoritative and uninvolved. Authoritative parents “impose rules and standards of behavior, but they’re also responsive and supportive” (Benokraitis 340).
