News from the Columbia Executive MBA Community April 5, 2013

A Message from the Dean of Students
Dear Students, Next week, you will receive a personalized link to our annual EMBA-NY student survey. I hope each of you will use the link to share your opinions on the EMBA program with the School. This survey is used each year to gather feedback on areas of critical importance to the student experience, inDean of Students Kelley Martin Blanco ‘02 cluding academics, operations, student services, technology, and facilities. We place a high priority on student satisfaction and this survey is one of the key drivers. Ratings for each area are measured and compared to previous years with a goal of achieving the highest possible ratings. All comments and suggestions are read and, whenever possible, acted upon. This survey is a critical tool. Each year it is used to determine where improvements should be made to optimize student satisfaction and enhance the EMBA experience. On every dimension, from the classroom to catering and everything in between, our goal is to provide you with the best CBS EMBA program to date. As always, there will be individual and group incentives for participation, so I encourage each of you will take a few extra minutes to complete the short survey. Congratulations to EMBANY students in our 2013EM and 2013SC classes on their upcoming graduation! Warmly,

According to the Transaction Cost Theory, since there is a high level of uncertainty between Hercules and Fafco as well as problems renegotiating, Fafco should vertically integrate. The uncertainty is probably a result of the rapid growth Fafco is experiencing. This rapid growth is causing demand and volume uncertainty. As the technology available to design and manufacture the panels advances, there is also some technology uncertainty. These uncertainties combine to cause a renegotiating problem: Fafco doesn’t think Hercules will renegotiate the existing contract even with all the uncertainty. Hercules is also able to decrease the value to Fafco by producing panels outside the required specifications as well as missing delivery timetables which increase the relationship friction, exasperating the renegotiating problem.…

On November 11, 1974, Gnazzo had an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted in her uterus for contraceptive purposes. The IUD was developed, marketed and sold by G.D. Searle & Co. (Searle). When Gnazzo’s deposition was taken, she stated that her doctor had informed her that “the insertion would hurt, but not for long,” and that she “would have uncomfortable and probably painful periods for the first three to four months. On October 11, 1975, Gnazzo found it necessary to return to her physician due to excessive pain and cramping. During this visit she was informed by her doctor that he thought she had Pelvic inflammatory Disease (PID). She recalled that he stated that the infection was possibly caused by venereal disease or the use of the IUD. The PID was treated with antibiotics and cleared up shortly thereafter. Less than one year later, Gnazzo was again treated for an IUD-associated infection. This infection was also treated with antibiotics. Gnazzo continued using the IUD until it was finally removed in December of 1977.…

There are three substantial questions that must be considered in this case; which are, does the charter of rights and freedoms apply to the CPCC, has Tim’s rights been violated and if so, can this violation be justified in a free and democratic society. Section 32 1(a) and (b) applies to the Canadian government and government (parliament/ legislators) of the government and all their authority they are in. Only the government has the ability to violate the charter of rights and freedoms. If a violation has occurred and the charter does come into effect (operation dismantle v. the queen). My partner and I stand in negation of the resolution, “Resolved: unilateral military force is justified by the United States to prevent nuclear proliferation” for three reasons. First, interfering with foreign affairs using military force gives many countries all the more reason to undergo nuclear proliferation. Second, the fact that military force by the U.S. is unilateral, many countries are in disfavor of it and finally, preventing nuclear proliferation is too great for the U.S. alone to handle.…

Following, students engaged in an internship breakout session with Dr. Beaupre and PPP Alumni Adam Clark. It is highly encouraged that in the summer between the end of their sophomore year and the fall semester of their junior year, students take on internships, whether that be locally in Cincinnati, back in their hometowns, or in the nation’s capital Washington D.C. The sophomores found this session particularly beneficial because it got students thinking about their summer plans, while allowing them to brainstorm the types of internships that best fit their skills, values, and varying interests.…

This paper aims to examine Bangladesh's overall economy with special focus on strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats (SWOT) analysis. The research has found that Bangladesh is going to encounter series of economic hurdles in near future. Over the last few decades, Bangladesh has been following a development path that was blazed by the fast growing Asian economies with export led growth fuelling higher living standards and falling poverty. Despite this, it is not too difficult to posit that Bangladesh today has more in common with the laggards in Asia. Slow growth, rising inequality, and a deprived countryside deny the vast majority of the Bangladeshi people the opportunity to enjoy happier, healthier, and more prosperous lives. A SWOT analysis of Bangladesh Economy has uncovered its overall strength, weakness, opportunity and threat in terms of its current position in world economy. Despite some strengths and opportunities, Bangladesh has lots of weaknesses and threats that could seriously undermine nation's development process at any time. For moving forward, Bangladesh needs to identify the opportunities and the key weaknesses that the country faces and adopt appropriate measures.…
