PPP Retreat: Program Analysis
Last weekend, 22 sophomore PPP students joined faculty, upperclassmen, and the Center for Faith & Justice at the Quaker House for the 2017 PPP Retreat. The Retreat provides PPP students an opportunity to engage directly with faculty, their cohort, and upperclassmen on the issues important to the growth and prosperity of the program. This year’s PPP Retreat investigated key questions about how to fully engage in the program and discovered new tools for discerning both about summer internships and future after college. Our hope is for students and attendees to benefit from learning more about the PPP program’s history, future, and resources our strong community has to offer each student.

The following sections are reflective of the Retreat

Colella and Dr. Beaupre opened the 2017 PPP Retreat with an interesting insight into the creation of the Program. They also introduced the possibility of a new law track, due to the growing class sizes and strong interest in studying law following undergraduate study at Xavier. The discussion was favored among sophomores as it offered a better understanding of the unique and transformative program they are a part of.
Following the discussion, Dr. John Fairfield gave an inspiring talk about life, resilience, and finding one’s vocation. Fairfield’s talk is always a student favorite as it strengthens the bond between him and the students. In sharing his personal story, Dr. Fairfield ensures sophomores that there is nothing wrong with being unsure of one’s future direction. He advises students to find a vocation they are passionate about, one that you will never be able to do justice, and find one that constantly inspires you to improve.
On Day 2 of the Retreat, we welcomed back PPP Alums Adam Clark, Rebecca Hollis, Rahiel Michael, and Joe Leonard to discuss life after PPP and to provide sophomores an idea of the types of careers that are possible with a PPP degree. The panel addressed an array of topics, ranging from resume tips and networking to job transitions and the skills that these PPP grads utilize on a daily

Sean opened with his first internship experience and discussed his biggest regret since college. The talk was favored among students because it emphasized the importance of leaning into discomfort and putting yourself into situations you would not otherwise find yourself in. When you dive in and engage it can have the most rewarding and enlightening outcomes.
Following, students engaged in an internship breakout session with Dr. Beaupre and PPP Alumni Adam Clark. It is highly encouraged that in the summer between the end of their sophomore year and the fall semester of their junior year, students take on internships, whether that be locally in Cincinnati, back in their hometowns, or in the nation’s capital Washington D.C. The sophomores found this session particularly beneficial because it got students thinking about their summer plans, while allowing them to brainstorm the types of internships that best fit their skills, values, and varying interests.

Rebekah Nathan, a professor at AnyU and author of "My Freshman Year", looks into the life of a college undergraduate student. Nathan's primary methodology was participant observation (p. 5). By going from being a professor to an undergraduate student, the little things had to change. She turned into a piece of the field work, needed to utilize individual exposure, and needed to lose objectivity in order to stay focused and on track with her research. Nathan came across a few difficulties along the way due to her choice of methodology and the fact that she was much older than the average college undergraduate student. However, going through the challenges she had to face lead her to some discoveries about students of the college while also living as a student herself.…

During my time at Gwynedd Mercy University, I experienced many hardships that today made me a stronger student. When I first attended Gwynedd Mercy University, my parents encouraged me to choose a major where I would have a career in allied health. Unfortunately, deep in my heart I knew it was something I did not want to pursue but I knew it would make my parents happy. As the semesters went on, I tried to keep up with the studies but science was just something I was not good at. This led me to struggle and choose another major. It took me a while to finally choose what I wanted to do and I always wanted to pursue a career that would help people in ways other than allied health sciences. I chose to declare Human Services as my major and I became very content. However, things were still not easy for me. The middle of my college years, I became very ill. I suffered from many illnesses that set me back on attending classes. At this same time, I grew into depression and anxiety because I did not want to use sickness as an excuse, but knowing that I was not in my best physical and mental state really discouraged me. As my illness went on, my family was hit with my mother being the only source of income. This led me to having to work extra hours at the crack of dawn before classes, attending classes, then…

My internship experience for this summer was quite engaging, exposing, knowledgeable, yet challenging at the same time. I began to serve at PSP Professional Services on May 31st. PSP Professional Services is a private practice created by one of the licensed counselors and it is funded through several insurances and/or employer-sponsored services. Moreover, my schedule consisted of going Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3p.m. Occasionally, I would attend Saturdays depending if there was an interpreter needed for the day. I chose this specific facility because it is located in the Hispanic area and I support the premise behind the foundation of this facility. PSP Professional Services hopes to reach out to those who have been victimized,…

Hello Dr. Aaron Oberman and fellow classmates. I’m excited to be taken this course because I’m almost at the finish line of completing my degree. I have been working in social services for almost 15 years helping adults meeting their needs while aiming at becoming self-sufficient. I enjoy my job, but I’m burned out, meaning my job no longer brings me the same satisfactions as it did 15 years ago. I reevaluated my life giving consideration to my age, family and happiness and decided it was time for a career change. As an undergrad student, I recall an instructor telling us in life most people will have a job and a career. Social Services is currently my job and school counseling will be my career. With age I have learned helping others…

Choosing a career is a very important aspect to people 's lives. One goes to college, usually around the age of eighteen, and by the time they leave they are expected to have decided on the career that they will have for the rest of their lives. Being a psychology and interpersonal communication major, I have always had an interest on relationships between individuals given certain stimuli presented to them. I want to have the ability to touch people 's lives by helping them understand themselves and why they behave the way in which they behave. Relationships are such an important aspect to the process of human growth, and they impact each and every one of us. Due to this assessment of myself, I have decided to go to Western Michigan University to pursue my goals of being a clinical social worker.…

In life, there are periods of transition in which individuals often face daunting challenges or obstacles. Overcoming these challenges at pivotal points of transition can impel the individual to develop essential character qualities and skills for surmounting adversity. My transition into high school was momentous. Here I knew that the decisions I made would likely have a strong impact on my future. Therefore, I had to be meticulous about the extracurricular activities I wanted to be involved in. This mindset allowed me to stay focused and determined because I wasn't focused on going to the next party or the new music that was out. I cared solely about the legacy I left behind. That is why I decided to run for student government at the end…
