The resident advisor position is a unique and powerful position on any campus; but it is particularly appealing to me on Union’s campus. My first real connection with anyone outside of my AOP class, of which I spent a majority of the summer, with was my RA. Perhaps one of the most profound things about people, especially the millennial generation, is the incredible acceptance and adaptations found in the face of situation in which we encounter people who are different from ourselves.The ability to mesh with the people around me, and to be a part of a community comes easily to me. Just as the AP course positively impacted me, with the assistance of the Woodford R. Porter Scholarship, I know I can have the same impact on the University of Louisville community. At the University of Louisville, I hope to earn my degree in chemical engineering. I do understand that this degree requires a lot of knowledge about mathematics. Because I was able to overcome difficult academic situations in high schools, I know I am better prepared to deal with these challenges in college. Furthermore, my experiences of struggling in my AP courses have helped me become more sympathetic to my peers. If I see one of my peers struggling, I will provide assistance to them because I know how hard it is to ask for help. Student development in higher education, is often a “complicated” process, and administrators and other professionals in the industry need the necessary tools, like being sensitive to student’s backgrounds and different cultures, for the “pursuit” success of student affairs. The American College Personnel Association outlines their argument that when administrators handle issues “responsibly” their student body population will in turn, live their “with some sense of equanimity” in the statement of Ethical Principles and Standards. The development of students is a multi-dimensional; and college administrators have to have the ability to discern when to use the appropriate techniques or “theoretical perspectives” to “identify learning opportunities and to reduce barriers that inhibit development.”…
