sexually abused, traumatized, those who are suffering from disorders and etc. Their goal is to help the community as much as possible in order to help the make the right decisions and overcome the barrier that is not letting them pursue their lives to its fullest potential. Their desire is to help each of their clients to achieve their goals. This facility offers a wide arrange of counseling services such as individual, family, marriage and group counseling. They also offer several parenting, anger management, and court-mandated classes. In addition, PSP Professional Services hosts camps every single summer that are designed to help clients learn coping skills through arts, crafts and music. Moreover, they provide counseling services to Spanish and/or English speaking children, adolescents and adults. Their population is equally varied in terms of ethnicity. However, I would say that while there are several clients that are children and adults, the majority of the population served is adolescents, which range from ages 10 to 19. Furthermore, in terms of employees and volunteers, there are 3 graduate interns, one undergrad intern, 4 administrative/office managers, 3 licensed professional counselors, 2 licensed clinical social workers, and one licensed marriage and family therapist. On another note, my job title at PSP Professional Services was interpreter.
I had the privilege to interpret in sessions, as well as sit and observe them. Each session was about 50 minutes long; however, they could extend to 2 hours if it is family therapy. I would also help at the summer camps held at the facility. I would interact with the children and assist the counselor and graduate intern in terms of teaching the children coping skills, creating games, posters, crafts, cleaning, and translating to the children or parents who did not understand English so well. Camp meetings were about four hours. In addition, I would also assist in the front office by filing insurance claims, making files for the new clients, making reminder calls for the camps or group sessions, signing-in the clients, making copies of the forms used for intakes, and etc. Typically, each assignment I had at the front desk took anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Overall, my experience at PSP Professional Services was phenomenal! I would definitely recommend other students to intern at this facility, especially if they are seeking the counseling approach of the psychology field. They do a great job at allowing students to gain first-hand experience by allowing them to observe sessions, as well as exposing them new techniques. Additionally, counselors are very knowledgeable as they are willing to help you understand coping skills, counseling techniques, or certain terminology in general. The staff at this facility actually invests time in your education in terms of how to prepare for graduate school, how to interact with clients, how approach different types of clients, how to administrate the practice, how to do notes and diagnose, and etc. They really understand the concept of sharing knowledge in order to make a greater impact in the community. However, I would recommend that they should hire interpreters, whose job would solely be to interpret sessions, interpret for clients, forms, and
even correct translated forms. There were several instances when we were short on interpreters and the office managers had to go, leaving the office unattended. Other than that, I really enjoyed working here and I hope to one day come back and maybe work for their facility as a clinical psychologist.
