I am interested in the MPD internship for numerous reasons. First, as my junior year is quickly concluding, I would like to narrow my quest for the correct placement, in addition to increasing my experience in a field that coincides with social work. Social Work is a very broad field, being that it ranges from military social workers to hospital ones, so hands on experience would better help me to choose which field fascinates me. Second, since social work and criminal justice work synchronously, it would be to my benefit to have a vast understanding of the criminal justice system of the city I hope to work in. So that I can greatly help my future clients and my community (being that I was born and raised in D.C.) . In a nutshell, this internship would assist me in selecting my specific field and help me to understand how to correctly associate with the representatives of criminal justice, as a social worker.
What can I offer the MPD as an intern? …show more content…
I have several virtues that I could offer the MPD, as an intern.
My first skill set is my drive, meaning that I am whole-hearted, tenacious, resourceful and willing to learn. My second skill set is that I have previous experience working with inner city youth. During my junior year of college, I began mentoring inner city Baltimore young ladies (middle school aged); whereas my organization(including myself) would support the young ladies in ways, such assisting with their homework, aiding them in figuring out life choices and lastly finding ways to improve their self-confidence. The third and final group of qualities I possess are secretarial work, meaning that I am skilled in a range of computer programs spanning from Microsoft Word to SPSS, I am sufficient in communication skills and finally I am organized and timely; this all shows that I am dependable and ready. Overall, though my skill sets are very diverse, I hope that they could be useful for your internship
program.
What do you expect to learn during this internship?
During this internship, I expect to learn exactly how social work and criminal justice collide. Being, how exactly do social workers fit into the criminal justice system, do they work only in courthouses, or only in prisons? Furthermore, I anticipate learning more about youth in the criminal justice system and the processes to their release and incarcerations, meaning what are the different experiences of officers having to arrest children. Finally, I hope to learn about a possible solution to the different crime surges and tactics that I could use to keep myself and my fellow man safe. With crime surges, the news only says that there is a crime surge, however the news does not give any more information as to why there was a surge or has it been a strike or a creeping increase. With knowing how to protect myself and my fellow man, I expect that this internship will give me the knowledge and power of knowing what to do in particularly uncertain situations. In conclusion, though my expectations for this internship might be high, they are all things that I could learn on the go or just by taking to people in my placement.
Where would be your ideal placement?
My ideal placement would be the Investigative Services Bureau - Domestic Violence Unit. This would be the ultimate placement for me, since first, it directly interacts with victims, which social work greatly encourages. As well as, with this assignment I could use the skills that I have learned in my major, so far. Second, this would be the best placement for me, since I would definitely get one of my expectations filled; which was to learn to how to defend myself and my fellow man, even if it’s not physically, but psychologically and emotionally. Lastly, I would be able to experience a completely different section of the criminal justice system, than what is usually portrayed in the media. Usually in the media you see images of certain aspects, but rarely do you get to see the actual process of assisting domestic violence victims. All in all, though the Investigative Services Bureau - Domestic Violence Unit would be my first pick for a placement, because it opens my eyes to an unseen world; I could advance my knowledge through any assignment.
