A LAS 102 Transfer Advantage intern should be familiar with other cultures. This campus is diverse and filled with individuals from all parts of the U.S. and the world. Interns should be aware of social differences and respect one another’s perspectives. The ways I would make everyone feel included is to make sure everyone feels welcome. I would make it clear that all opportunities are for all students, no matter their diversity. For those struggling to find their place, I will refer them to culture houses and organizations. For some individuals, it can be overwhelming attending a large institution with a large diverse population. Individuals in my class will engage in-group discussion every day. Each time they must talk with someone they haven’t…

Those in the healthcare profession are respected, hardworking individuals who went above and beyond to prove themselves capable of helping others in the greatest way possible. My career goals are very straightforward. I’ve taken several steps in high school to accomplish these goals by being well disciplined in my studies, and participating in a Health Careers Internship Program. This program offers me a variety of opportunities that make me a more applicable in a healthcare setting. I’ve learned how to build a strong résumé and cover letter, and how do professional interviews well. We also get the chance to observe and participate in a medical environment. I’ll be shadowing with Dr. Steve Carr at Northern Star Therapy and learn the basics of physical therapy. I’ve done also done volunteer work in a Geriatric setting, at the St. Benedict nursing home in St. Cloud. My plans following high school are to attend the University of Minnesota in the College of Biological Sciences. My hopes are to complete my undergraduate in there in the Pre-Medicine program, attend graduate school, and specialize in a currently undecided field of…
Throughout my high school experience, the one memory I remember the most that helped me the most would have to be the time I interned at a local non-profit, Lettuce Live Well. I decided that I needed to encounter more challenges in my life; as if my life wasn’t challenging enough. I decided to work with a non-profit because I knew I would get all the experience I can get while getting to work head on with the local community; this was what made it all worth it. The one place that I found I can get the most experience while still connecting with the local community was an organization call Lettuce Live Well.…
I am in my second year of the UA MPH program, which requires an internship component as a Master’s Report. Dr. McDermott recommended I meet with you to discuss possible projects I could be part of. My MPH concentration is Health Services Administration. I am mainly interested in quality improvement (QI) and practice management/strategic planning (I apologize for the broadness of my interest) in college health service settings. I recently had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Lundergan and reviewed the Campus Health Service QI program and some of the current studies.…
However, it actually turned out that I had more in common with my African-American roommate, who was also came from a low-income household in Southern California, than I did with my 3rd generation Mexican-American roommate who came from a middle-class suburban city. I had no idea the impact that different generations and cultural differences outside of race have the ability to make until I actually experienced it. Thanks to this experience, I feel my culturally competency expanded to new horizons. As a social worker, I plan to take what I have learned from my experience and education of the transcultural perspective that San Jose State’s mission has established and practice it with people I work with. This will be one of the many ways I plan on contributing to the profession to promote social justice as well as advocate for the communities who consistently face oppression and social…
My internship experience for this summer was quite engaging, exposing, knowledgeable, yet challenging at the same time. I began to serve at PSP Professional Services on May 31st. PSP Professional Services is a private practice created by one of the licensed counselors and it is funded through several insurances and/or employer-sponsored services. Moreover, my schedule consisted of going Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3p.m. Occasionally, I would attend Saturdays depending if there was an interpreter needed for the day. I chose this specific facility because it is located in the Hispanic area and I support the premise behind the foundation of this facility. PSP Professional Services hopes to reach out to those who have been victimized,…
Have you ever been to the doctor and don't quite understand what the provider is telling you, or are you a healthcare worker and you don't understand your patients? Should the healthcare provider get diversity training or should they maybe learn new languages? More than ever before, healthcare professionals are subjected to dealing with a number of immense and different cultural diversities. While diversity is often a term used to refer specifically to cultural differences, diversity applies to all the qualities that make people different. Diversity requires more than knowing about individual differences and it key for overcoming cross-cultural barriers in healthcare.…
I would like to contribute to the 96 percent success rate of interns who passed on the first try at the UVA Health System dietetic internship. I want to acquire the necessary skills and professional behaviors to become an entry-level dietitian and this dietetic internship would provide me with the techniques and tools to get me there. In the future I would like to become a board certified specialist in either nutrition support or pediatrics. Being an intern at UVA health systems would present me with the opportunities to explore different specialties of nutrition by learning from well-respected experts to help me determine which area I am most passionate about. Getting the opportunity to participate in unique rotations such as transplant, PICU and nutrition support emergency/medicine will give me an advantage in the future to learn what specialty suits me the…
As a Hispanic woman who comes from a Hispanic cultural heritage I have aspired to become a Physician. My Latino heritage has influenced me to perpetuate my education and reach my dream vocation as a Physician within my community. I have huge fascination with science especially in the science behind skin and beauty. Although my motivation emanates from my love of helping people. I want to help people in need and provide extra help to those who come from the same heritage as me. An immensely colossal part of my cultural heritage is the language. Spanish is the primary spoken language used among Hispanics.…
I would like to tell you that my day in the program was unique because it let me explore the program in depth. I am working at the Cleveland clinic as an English-Arabic healthcare interpreter and I feel the warm atmosphere between all the people in the hospital every day. Being in the hospital to facilitate the communication between the patients with limited English proficiency and the physicians made my dream of being a resident at the Cleveland Clinic grow within me. Those bilingual encounters made me familiar with the hospital departments where I had to work as a team with different staff, nurses and lab technicians to make sure that we provide the highest quality of care to the patients. Furthermore, I had a new friend waiting for me in…
Chris Miller has been given an opportunity to take over an established dental clinic. The benefits of taking over this clinic is that he already has loyal customers and that there is only three clinics in the city. Miller has some major decisions that he needs to think about before he takes over this practice. He needs to decide how he will finance this purchase and how will he get the bank to give him a loan? Before we can even decide if he should go ahead with the purchase, we need to analyze three different scenarios of what can happen to the practice. We also need to make sure that Miller would be able to repay the loans as we are analyzing the different scenarios.…
In the United States, minority populations are often faced with many adversities. The younger populations frequently encounter barriers that may prevent them from seeking higher education, leaving a need for an increase number of diverse health professionals. Therefore, the importance of creating programs that focus on recruiting students of diverse population is crucial in order to help serve our ethnically diverse population. Pipeline programs, like the one offered by UCLA, helps provide opportunities to underrepresented students in order to increase their representation in various career fields. For instance, the UCLA pipeline program encourages their students to enter the medical field (UCLA, 2017).…
In addition, I am an excellent problem solver. If there is a problem with a client I throw all of my resources to come to a solution. From this internship I would gain the experience of being in the behavioral health field. I would be prepared for my future in the behavioral health field. Also this would give me the experience I need with youths that are in the clinic for behavior problems. This internship would also give me the workplace experience that I would need to know for a job in my field. In the end I think I would bring great qualities to this internship as well as I would take away an amazing experience and…
A group I include myself in: bilingual. Moving to the United States has opened my eyes to the diversity a single country can have. There are many cultures that I’ve never known of and which has been interesting to learn about. Part of being bilingual is that you are able to communicate and help people who don’t know or speak English. I volunteer at a hospital; therefore I’ve encounter opportunities to help nurses, CNAs, and staff communicate with patients and visitors who only speak Spanish.…
