Dear President Barack Obama:
I am a Colorado citizen who has supported you throughout both of your presidential campaigns. I am writing you to express my concern of hydraulic fracturing. It has become a major issue in Colorado and the United States as a whole and I am troubled for the health and wellbeing of citizens and their animals.
Hydraulic fracturing is a danger to air, water, land, animals and communities in the United States. Fracking has a mix of over 596 chemicals and is combined with anywhere between one and seven million gallons of fresh water per well (Gasland). You can fracture a well up to 18 times in its life. Therefore, each well uses anywhere from 18 million to 126 million gallons of fresh water.
Some argue that the use of horizontal drilling has been around for about 40 years. The truth is that only since 2011 has it been combined with fracking (theoec.org). The …show more content…
Communities in the rural areas of the United States have been majorly impacted and continue to have health problems and loose animals due to this issue, even when the companies say they “fixed the problem” by adding water filters for clean water tanks. With these so called “fixes” people are still having issues with the water being contaminated. The filter solution took a great deal of time to be an option because oil and gas companies have been slow to respond to consumers with complaints.
I strongly urge you to do something drastic about fracking. Protecting the profits of companies should not come before protecting the health and well being of American Citizens. With the Energy Policy Act, the cards are stacked against the average citizen and in the favor of deep pocketed oil and gas companiesThis is not just and I ask you to do something about it
