Franklin D Roosevent

The presidency of Fanklin D. Roosevent was responsible for the passage of the twenty second amendement. Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to his first term in 1932 and a secound term in 1936. In general, FDR did not favor third terms. A precedent was set by Geoge Washington to serve only two terms. The reason was that Washington felt that political ambition was distastful and felt the desire to maintain power was the same as kings wanting power. As of 1940, there were no limits to the tenure of a president. With the start of WW2 and the Great Depression, FDR ran for a third term, due to his popularity he was elected. His popularity was based on his creation of the "New Deal", which created regulations on Banks, reduced unemployment, faught federal work programs, gave aid to farmers, and assistance to senior citizens.
They felt that the government was gaining too much power over the states. Rosevelt attempted to add six new judges on the supreem court in order to act against the actions of the sitting judges. Cartoonists at the time showed FDR as a king, instead of a president. After the death of FDR the fear of being protracted presidencies continued and in 1997 the 22nd amendment was
