Edna was a very strong, smart, and independent woman. She had to “fight for her right.” Her society always saw her as the wife of someone and expected her to do what wife-mother’s would do in this time. She didn’t like the rules that were forced upon her. She wanted to be independent. Her husband expected her to be the typical woman as well. "Mr. Pontellier had been a rather courteous husband so long as he met a certain tacit submissiveness in his wife. But her new and unexpected line of conduct completely bewildered him. It shocked him. Then her absolute disregard for her duties as a wife angered him." She wanted to be free from the life she was expected to live. She wanted to live happily and how she wanted. Robert was her sense of freedom. He gave her what she need, and though what they did was wrong,that excited her, she loved the feeling of doing something wrong. At the end of the story Edna decides to walk into the ocean and keep walking until she couldn't walk anymore. Eventually her eyes shut and relaxation consumed her. I do believe that things could've ended differently though. She may have believed that her life was always going to be that way, but that might have not been the case. I don't believe in giving up on something, you should ALWAYS stay and put up a fight no matter what.
