Freshman 15 Research Paper
One of the biggest fears of college students is gaining an excessive amount of weight. As most UMass students know, the school’s dining commons are currently ranked second in the United States by the Princeton Review. When I began attending school, the term “Freshman 15” was a common term that was often spoken about amongst my friends. The term “Freshman 15” refers to the amount of weight which is expected to be gained in the first year of college because of the easy access of food. I always looked at the “Freshman 15” as a myth before college. I wanted to learn more about UMass Amherst’s food. I wondered if it could be possible that UMass could be ranked as having one of the best dinning commons in the country and also have healthy …show more content…
I asked my friend Danny Trinh in the Worcester Dining hall, “Why do you eat Pizza and Fries often, when you know that it is unhealthy?” He replied, “That’s all they have.” He said, because of the disgusting food, such as the red bean burger, he began leaning towards the good tasting unhealthy food. So what influences young adults and their food choices? Hebden states, “Taste was the most important influence on food selection, followed by convenience (availability), cost, nutrition/health value, smell and stimulatory properties (alertness).” Students like to lean towards food that tastes the best, therefore ignoring the health aspects which can impact them long term. It can be concluded that services should provide low-cost nutritious food that tastes good. During my time in UMass, my eating habits were bad, I would often eat foods high in cholesterol and fats, such as bacon and fries. Within 2-3 months, I had gained about 5 pounds. I had friends that gained more weight, and some that even lost weight. Ever since I began my research on “Freshman 15,” I learned ways to balance my diet, such as including more salads and

The hectic university life for most undergraduates has been cited in many research works as the primary cause that hampers ones motivation to adopt a healthy eating lifestyle. Exposed to stress coupled with the need to race against time to meet the datelines of endless assignments, Rubina et al.(2009) were certain that these factors pose a barrier to the adoption of healthy eating behaviors. Many of the undergraduates would either skip their meals or opt for convenient food options, such as fast foods, that allow them to eat and work at the same time (Savige et al., 2007). It is not that university students do not know about the importance of healthy eating, but rather, they lack the nutrition knowledge to guide them in selecting nutritious food that their body requires (Gan et al., 2011). Consequently, their concept of eating revolves around consuming sufficient food to stave off their hunger regardless of the nutritional content in the food.…

I am a 35-year-old student of Culinary Arts at Bermuda College and my wife is a nutritionist. Since both of us have professions associated with food, we tend to make healthy food choices and also avoid skipping meals or over-eating on any given day or occasion. However, its surprising to see most of the college students not concerned about what they eat since eating habits can directly influence physical well being of individuals. As stated in Journal of American College Health, “Improper diet, unhealthy food choices, and exercise habits in college can lead to increased risk of certain weight-related diseases, and a lack of nutrient balance can make it difficult for them to keep up with the demands of college (Racette SB, et al, 2005).” Education about healthy diet can play a crucial role. “How to avoid bad eating habits" is a course all college students should take.…

There are several reasons why selling junk food on campus must be stopped. The consumption of fast food by university students has increased greatly over the past years. Students no longer have breakfast or lunch at home. Most of them find home-made food a waste of time or tasteless. They use much of their pocket money to buy snacks that are rich in oil, sugar, fat and salt instead. As its name shows, junk food is all types of food with very little nutritional value. Most students, however, do not realize that what they are eating is the source of much of their behavioral and health problems. The sugary and fatty food such as, potato chips or chocolate bars contains a huge amount of calories which cause hyperactivity and poor concentration among a lot of students during lectures. This unhealthy diet explains, in part, the relatively poor academic performance of a big number of students.…

Freshman year is the beginning of all things important and all things new. You move to a new school, you follow new trends, you make new friends. But this year for me meant time for a new backpack. I had had my last bag for a few years, and it was an unpleasant purple and dirty gray and worn down like a rag doll. Even in its roughest days of frayed straps and dirt covered bottom, I still loved it. Plus, I hated looking for new backpacks, they were all going to be cheep looking and ugly. They all look the same, usually they had three to four pockets, some had elegant designs and others were dull and colorless. They all lacked the character my bag had rightfully earned.…

The article, “Risk Factors Associated with Overweight and Obese College Student”, the authors Melissa N. Desai, William C. Miller, Betty Staples and Terrill Bravender conducted a study on how food plays a role in college students life along with being physically inactive. An extensive survey was sent through email to three campuses in North Carolina. This email was sent to all undergraduates with the exception of some because of internet difficulties not all the students received the email. The total resulted in 4,201 undergraduate students who received the email. This study used the Eating Attitudes Test 26 (EAT 26) questionnaire that asked multiple questions even though it was normally used to diagnose eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia nervosa (Desai, Miller, Staples, & Bravender, 2008).…

Students at Memorial University are facing great pressure from school and work. A healthy eating habit can help students to balance nutrition, keep healthy, and maintain energy. However, many students, especially international students, choose to have fast food or snack food as their lunch and dinner at the university centre. Unhealthy diet is a common phenomenon at university (Sameer, 2009), according to the American College Healthy Association(2006), a 2004 study indicates that no more than 7.3% college students ate five or more serving of fruits and vegetables each day. It is hard for students to choose nutritious food instead of convenient food. However, healthy diet at university means more than a healthy body for now but a healthy eating habit in the long term. It is necessary to arouse concern about the unhealthy eating habits and popularize the healthy way.…
