My part in this proposition project was to find information on the fiscal effect initiative, list all interest groups who supported this initiative along with stating what each vote meant. Whether it being a “yes” vote or a “no” vote.…
We are having a Spring break Camp at the Lincoln park Community Center starting April 10th-13th from 9-3pm. I was wondering if you can come out and show our camp kids what the K-9 unit is about.…
Certain behaviors demonstrated by the adolescent become unregulated and uncontrolled. These youths grow up and due to their unregulated behavior, consequently corrupt the future youths of the community they live in (Why Do Youth Join Gangs?). Their behaviors become cultural norms within the community resulting in the creation of barriers that prevent social and economic opportunities. The defiant character that may manifest from gang affiliation produces a “fatalistic view of the world” providing the youth with the interpretation that everything or anything that happens around them is fate and…
Issues such as lack of proper education, dead-end minimum wage jobs, unsanitary living conditions, and unfair labor practices can have a detrimental impact on the health condition of individuals in a community. Newcomers or recent immigrants in Canada do not always get the job that they desire and many end up doing odd jobs barely able to meet basic needs. In that case proper health and wellness would become the least of their priorities. As society and as a nation we must strive to correct all the inequities such as job opportunities, access to affordable high-quality education, and overall activities and programs that help integrate immigrants into mainstream Canadian society.…
I attend the premier high school in the state of Illinois and I am constantly reminded about it. Even though this has become a running joke between the students, I am really glad that I have been able to attend my prestigious high school, because Edwardsville High School that has motivated me to be successful and given me amazing opportunities that I may not have had somewhere else.…
One of the biggest fears of college students is gaining an excessive amount of weight. As most UMass students know, the school’s dining commons are currently ranked second in the United States by the Princeton Review. When I began attending school, the term “Freshman 15” was a common term that was often spoken about amongst my friends. The term “Freshman 15” refers to the amount of weight which is expected to be gained in the first year of college because of the easy access of food. I always looked at the “Freshman 15” as a myth before college. I wanted to learn more about UMass Amherst’s food. I wondered if it could be possible that UMass could be ranked as having one of the best dinning commons in the country and also have healthy…
All teen activist are fighting for different thing. But look at Malala she is fighting for girls education. And Fay Carry is fighting for people to get lost dogs a home. Plus Alex Lyne is fighting to get electronic waste and have people recycle it and not throw it away. And they all have one thing in common they all stand up for what they believe in.…
The freshman 15 is a real thing and for adolescents heading off to college, they should make sure to be cautious of their eating habits. With 142 million Americans being obese, it has become more of a problem with people of all ages, but college freshman have a history of gaining weight when they arrive at school. People speculate that the behavioral, environmental, and occupational changes cause this, along with stress, exercise habits, and the fact that food is available at all times. No matter what the cause is, gaining weight in college is a real problem.…
Some schools have long breaks for a month or two while others have school all year round. Schools should be year round with more breaks to improve education. Having school year round means that students won’t forget what they learn at school and that they’ll get more education. Students will be able improve what they have problems in and that means they’ll be able to pass tests without being left behind.…
All throughout our lives we have had to balance school with whatever important thing was going on at that time. In elementary school it was easy. We had to balance school and play time. In middle school it was a little more difficult because we had to balance school, our friends and the occasional relationship. High school was when it became a little tricky because it was when most of us got our first job. We then had to balance our job, friends, relationships, and school. We somehow managed to balance all of these things throughout our lives until college came along. College is a transition period for many students, most of which must learn to balance work, friends, serious relationships, and financial debt.…
By understanding that youth association with gangs are becoming a growing problem, the need for prevention, intervention, mentorship, therapeutic programs have also become an apparent reality. Author, Dishion, T. J and etl., agrees when they also state, “By linking the academic failure and peer rejection to early gang involvement, it will be useful to consider family centered intervention, after school prevention, gang intervention and any other positive program to focus on the school system” (pg 70). With adolescents gang involvement steady raising, the call for more early prevention programs maybe apparent and could help. But, if this societal issue is not address with urgency adolescent gang involvement numbers may continue to soar.…
The belief that liberal arts is extra, just for fun, not useful, worthless, a waste of money, unproductive, futureless, (any or all of the above) is quite frankly a ludicrous claim. Many adults have engrained in their minds, sure that it’s fine to take as a course in school, but it’s never going anywhere, it’s never going to land a career, a job, a lifestyle. The stereotype for ‘worthless’ majors is always liberal arts degrees (whether is philosophy, art history, or Russian literature, they have all been thrown under the bus). In actuality, liberal arts degrees and careers are crucial in today’s day and age, and can often lead to well-paying jobs. When a student decides to go to art school, they are often faced with criticism and other people…
Our children are so important and the idea that our schools don’t see that is a scary thought. Recess has been a way to allow our kids to connect with others socially, build new bonds through similar interest, exercise, and refresh after sitting in a stuffy classroom for so long. Students need recess because just like our muscles need rest time to build after a workout, so do our brains. If we are constantly cramming information in, our brain will become over worked and we will start to experience major health problems in our kids. It is even worse now a day because we have technology to battle with. Students are learning that play time is on an IPad or cell phone. They are losing a very valuable and influential time in their lives.…
