Friar Lawrence In Shakespeare's The Tragedy Of Romeo And Juliet
Imagine never having a say in anything. Imagine having someone tell you who to love. How would anyone be able to handle that. What if you loved someone so much, you would rather die than not be with them, but your family hates their family, forcing you to do the same. Now imagine you are Romeo, or Juliet, from Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. This is the exact situation they were put in. Romeo a Montague, and Juliet a Capulet, two names in feud, fall in love with each other. These two poor kids were essentially driven to killing themselves by their parents; never really getting to know their kids, being in an everlasting feud, and forcing juliet into a non consensual marriage. Many people use the argument that he married them in secret, or that it’s his fault because he gave Juliet the potion. “ When presently through all thy veins shall run A cold and drowsy humor, for no pulse…” (Shakespeare 453). He gave Juliet the advice to fake her death; therefore, many people would blame Friar. However, this is not the case. If you look back farther Juliet goes to the Friar threatening to kill herself. “Unless thou tell me how I may prevent it. If in thy wisdom thou canst give no help, Do thou but call my resolution wise And with this knife I’ll help it presently” (Shakespeare 452). Firar has to scramble to come up with an idea on the spot, and frankly it was a good plan compared to letting Juliet kill herself on the spot. As you can see the parents of both Romeo and Juliet, deserve the blame for the deaths of their kids. Through forcing juliet into a marriage, never knowing their kids, and always being in an everlasting feud; this drove these kids to commit suicide. If only they could’ve been closer to their parents, if they weren’t enemies, or if they didn’t threaten their own kids, Romeo and Juliet would have been honest with them. If honesty was an option in this story, Romeo and Juliet never would have
