Erin Brockovich
I have to start this out by saying that Julia Roberts is one of my favorite female actors around today. This particular movie that she is in, Erin Brockovich, is when Julia Roberts was in her prime Erin has been divorced twice and is a gorgeous mother of three in her thirties. Erin starts out jobless and in a very messy court case the resulted from an unclear car accident. The accident put her $17,000 in debt due to her hospital bills and of course the car.
Due to Erin’s current circumstances, she is desperate for a job so she begs her lawyer until he finally caves in and gives her a low paying job as a lawful associate in a California firm. Erin dresses very trashy and she speaks her mind, which is actually quite inappropriate at times. But none the less, one day at work she was sorting paperwork relating to real estate cases, Erin stumbles on to some medical records in a file that she was organizing. On the spur of the moment, she carries out a little exploring which results in her believing that the land that was bought by Pacific Gas and Electric is the identical property that had hexavalent chromium contamination resulting from Pacific Gas and Electrics environmentally negligent activities. Hexavalent chromium is a toxic and deadly chemical that causes cancer. If you think that’s bad it gets worse by targeting the kidneys, eyes respiratory system, skin and liver. It is estimated that 558,000 workers are potentially exposed to hexavalent chromium in the United States. To make matters even worse, the Pacific Gas and Electric company was handing out pamphlets that said that hexavalent chromium was healthy for you. After all of these discoveries, the Pacific Gas and Electric company was immediately taken to trial.
Due to Erin’s curiosity, she decides to take trip to do some investigating on her discovery for an entire week. She only left a message to her lawyer saying that she

    Hinkley is located in the Mojave Desert, near the town of Barstow, California. It is not far off the famous Route 66, about 150 miles from Las Vegas. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, Hinkley is an important point on PG&E's natural gas pipeline as it travels from Texas to California. PG&E lied about the type of chromium they were using, their chromium was poisonous, and lies were told to the community saying that the chromium being used was actually good for them. A little town in Hinkley Ca. was the most affected by this actions of PG&E. their water became contaminated and so many civilians got very ill. When the cooling water became saturated with undissolved solids (like chrome 6), PG&E discharged some of it into unlined earthen ponds located at the compressor station. Even more shocking were the amounts of residue left on the soil after PG&E sprayed contaminated wastewater into the air. After the water dried, soil-containing chrome 6 was free to blow in the wind where it could be inhaled by living things.These cases of many people couldn’t have been unheard and that’s when Erin Brokovich came into the story. Erin became wealthy and a very good lawyer soon after winning the case of Hinkley vs PG&E. the alleged chromium 6 was the main palying role in the case. Chromium is a member of the heavy metal group of iron, lead, mercury, and arsenic. Chromium 6 as well as lead, mercury and arsenic are very toxic not only to cells but also on the body tissue. Chromium typically bears a charge of +3 or +6 which is a highly- oxidized state for a metallic element. According to the Agency for toxic Substance and Disease Registry , chromium is used in 3 main industrial areas: metallurgy ( manufacture of different metals and metal materials), refractory ( heat-resistant applications) and other chemistry applications.     It is with great concern that I am writing this letter to address the public health of our community. Recently, there have been a number of children and adults who have strangely started to develop similar illnesses. The one thing each of these people has in common is that they all live right here in our community. My feels were that these sudden illnesses were not a matter of coincidence but instead a matter or poor practice. This feeling has proven to be accurate. Upon further investigation, it is has come to light that the reckless policies of our local gas company are endangering the health of our community. Contamination testing done on our water supply as well as soil tests shows extremely high amounts of a toxic chemical that is used by the gas company. This chemical that the company is releasing into our community has been linked to various illnesses that are similar to the ones experienced by our citizens. Interviews with two former employees of the gas company reveal that they were aware of this chemical leaking into our community water supply but the issue continually got swept under the rug. It was these employees belief that the company felt there was not enough of the toxic chemical being leaked to cause health problems. They are not aware as to how our local gas company came up with this irresponsible solution but we are aware as to how it has caused life-threatening illness among our community. Management at the company had no response when asked if they were aware of contamination so it is apparent that we must speak out as a community. Although not all of you have been affected by this shocking behavior, you are bound to be in the future unless we take the appropriate steps. We must unite together and demand changes in the company’s policies so that they are no longer poisoning the citizens of our tight knit community. George has admitted this has been a constant problem but without new smokestack scrubbers, which corporate headquarters has denied, he was out of ideas. As George continued to contemplate this dilemma he began making phone calls to other Ardnak plants and discovered that they schedule the mass of their production at night to evade the Environmental Protection Agency periodic emission readings. A month later George, still contemplating on what to do had received another phone call from Bill expressing his discontentment. Bill reminded George that industrial jobs were hard to find and if a he could not find a solution to the problem then Ardnak would be have to move the company 15 miles south of Hondo to Mexico, where there is no Environmental Protection Agency. This relocation would result in a massive layoff and continue to pollute the air. George is faced with an immense ethical issue.
