“What do you want to be when you grow up?” has been asked throughout everyone’s childhood. Since elementary we had the firefighters, police men, doctors, and even zookeepers come in to persuade us that the career they’ve chosen is a terrific career for us. I always wanted to be the coolest person there but, once I grew up, and went from fantasyland to realityworld, I realized that it’s not about the cool guns, stethoscopes and suits that you can have, it’s extra years of school after you graduate school: College. Having two older sisters who didn’t make it through high school and is living from paycheck to paycheck and job to job is a struggling experience to witness. Without a college degree, you’re at the bottom of the hire list and the top of the fire list. My sister landed an amazing job at a daycare facility in a low income area. She was so thrilled because this was the first job in 4 years that she wasn’t making minimum wage. She quit her two fast food jobs and immediately started at the daycare. After about 3 months, she was laid off. They had just recently hired a lady with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and although you can’t fire someone because another person better applied for the job, they simply said it was evaluation related. She came home crying because she had to find another job fast. She doesn’t have any credit cards, savings accounts, or even extra “pocket” money from getting paid. After that dispiriting week, she said seriously, “Aliyah, don’t follow in my footsteps. Be the best you can. Some just thinks college is a waste of time because they know someone who hasn’t gone to college. However, College should be a way to take control of your life and let you be the judge of where you want to work at. The saying, “You have to work hard to get what you want.” Applies to almost everything life throws at you-including college. Therefore, I don’t see any other option, besides college, to make an impact and to grow spiritually and
