1. How does temperature influence the population of fruit flies?
2. Do fruit flies reproduce faster in cool or warm temperatures? ie. Is the reproduction rate of fruit flies faster in warm temperatures or cooler temperatures?
Hypothesis:
Using two separate 750g boxes of peaches, one box placed in a warm environment (in front of a window allowing direct sunlight onto the peaches), while the other is placed in a cool environment (beneath the kitchen sink), over a period of two weeks, fruit flies will tend to reproduce at a more rapid rate and lay their eggs in the warmer environment.
Aim:
To investigate the reproduction rate of and the influence on fruit flies in high and low temperatures over a period of two weeks when exposed to 750g of ripened peaches, respectively.
Independent variable:
-The reproduction rate of …show more content…
- Both boxes covered with nets
- Observations done during the same time
Materials Required:
• 750g of ripened peaches all being of equal size
• Two glass platters (one placed in a sunny, warm area and the other placed in a shady, cool area)
• Two separate food covering nets (in order to trap the fruit flies but still allow them to breathe)
• A magnifying glass, to see the fruit flies more clearly
• A thermometer to measure the temperature of the peaches
• A kitchen weighing scale
• Two clear, plastic containers of equal size
• An exam pad
• A pen
• Captured fruit flies
• Permanent marker
Method:
• During mid-February, when daily temperatures are highest, divide 750g of peaches into two containers respectively (6 peaches per container), using your kitchen scale.
• Label container A and B using a permanent
