It Says/Quote
“No one can guess the full value of any kind of animal, plant or microorganism. Its potential is spread across a spectrum of known and as yet unimagined human needs.” Chapter 5, Page 113
I Say/Summary:
While we currently have a vast knowledge of various animals and plants and what purposes we can use them for, we have to recognize that there are countless other species out there that we have little to no knowledge about that could possibly have beneficial uses. Even the species we have a deep understanding of could surprise us in the future when we have better technology to research them more profoundly. The Author is trying to convey a message about how we are just killing off potential species
that could be unimaginable valuable, and how we should work on preserving these species. We have no idea what kind of value these species have, and yet we are mindlessly driving them to extinction for short term monetary values. We should work towards preserving different types of species, not just for the animals or the plants sake, but for ours as well.
So…/Response:
1. Connections
Just reading this certain paragraph with this quote reminded me of how badly I wanted to be a paleontologist when I was younger. I was so marveled at dinosaurs and wanted to know more about them. Sadly, they went extinct 65.5 million years ago and we will never know what they had that could have benefited us. No matter how much digging up we do of dinosaur bones, we can only have so much knowledge of them since they are extinct. However, this isn’t just for dinosaurs, but also applies to the countless other species that we have drove to extinction that we may not even have known about.
2. Comments
I enjoyed reading about the potential that these species have, and how they can be used for many different purposes such as medical and agricultural uses. It was also a bit difficult reading this certain chapter because as I realized how much we benefit and rely on these species, as it was hard facing the truth that we may never learn about the potential some of these undiscovered species had. I also found interesting how the author ended the chapter, as he didn’t end on how important earth is because of self-preservation, but hinting that there might be bigger reason on why we might want to preserve this planet.
