The first technique used in the documentary, GMO OMG by Jeremy Seifert, that I found very effective was the use of scientific research. This research helps to persuade the people watching the documentary that GMO’s are indeed harmful toward our healths. Jeremy interviewed a scientist named Gilles Eric Seralini who was a professor of molecular biology. He conducted a research on Monsanto’s 603 GMO corn to see the health effects caused by it. Seralini conducted his research in order to find out whether or not it would have a negative impact on the rat. Effects from the GMO’s were shown quite quickly after a couple of months as the rats had severe tumours in their livers and kidneys. Moreover, when the research of Seralini was out he was broadly criticized and numerous scientists stated that he was a fraud. The only other study that had been conducted was by Monsanto itself and even though the same type of rat was used, Monsanto resulted in opposite results to that of Seralini. They concluded that the GMO was completely safe. This was also a useful technique to use as it raised suspicion and doubt in the research of Monsanto because as no company would say anything negative about their own product in their results, Seralini’s results were more trustable. Moreover, this technique helped the viewers to be aware that the foods they are eating can cause potential harmful effects to them such as tumours.…
Thanks to subliminal advertising and propaganda drilled into our head since we were little, we have come to associate certain foods with wholesomeness and others with nastiness. When we look at the GMO and high-tech food mess from this perspective, we see that it’s the organic-versus-regular battle. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)/Genetically Engineered (GE) foods are the result of laboratory processes which artificially insert genes into the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of food crops or animals. There are many arguments both in favor of and against mandatory labeling of GMO/GE foods. Whether or not to require labeling of GMOs or GE foods also involves the debate over the risks and benefits of food crops produced using biotechnology. However, the overarching argument is consumers have a right to know what is in their food, especially concerning products that can cause allergic reactions. According to the Campaign for Healthier Eating in America, Genetically Modified (GM) foods are linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals (http://www.responsibletechnology.org). Because there is no scientific evidence that GMO/GE foods do or do not cause health issues in humans (because there have been no long-term studies), consumers may or may not be being harmed by GMOs. However, the safety of GMOs has been questioned by other countries. In fact, they are banned by food manufacturers in Europe and other countries, but, present in the majority of meats, produce, diary and processed foods in the United States (US). Many consumers in the US have no knowledge that they are consuming GMOs. If they did, it is now known if, similar to Europe, many would prefer to not consume GMO/GE foods. It is time to open your eyes to this silent problem that is occurring right now. Genetically modified organisms are in the foods we eat and are ultimately making people sick. Research has shown that consuming genetically modified foods increases your risk for getting cancers and tumors. The only way to avoid it is to eat organic which is not always affordable for everyone. My solution to the problem is to encourage others to eat organic foods and spread awareness by creating an organization called Health Crusaders.
