Gabby Douglas
Did you know that gymnast, Gabby Douglas won the Summer Olympics in 2012, and not only because of her superior talent in gymnastics, but also because of her ambitious personality. Gabby Douglas is an Olympic gymnast, starting her gymnastics career at the age of six. She was born on December 31 in 1995, she grew up in Virginia and then moved to Iowa to further pursue a more serious gymnastic career. Although other gymnasts have obviously won gold in the olympics, she was the first African American gymnast to win gold at the Olympics, she also plans to compete in the 2016 Olympics taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Gabby Douglas is the best gymnast ever because of her inspiration to others, dedication and her many medals in competition.
One reason that Gabby Douglas is the best gymnast ever is because of her inspiration to others. All across the world other gymnasts are inspired by her dedication and skill, she helps others overcome obstacles and fears in their gymnastic career. For example Gabby Douglas inspires a young girl with Lupus to never quit, the girl said ,”She is such an amazing person, and that's why I wanted to meet her, because she was in gymnastics and the Olympics and her story was kind of like mine, she went through a lot and wanted to quit, and she didn't."(Sukiennik). Douglas had inspired a girl with a life threatening disease, something that may not be treatable, to never give up, even if she wanted to quit. Even though others point out that many gymnasts inspire people, no other gymnast has ever actually impacted someone’s life for the better, as shown in the evidence when Gabby had inspired a girl with Lupus. Furthermore Gabby was the first African American gymnast to win an individual gold medal in gymnastics, inspiring other African Americans all over. For example an African American girl said,”Every time I watch Douglas — skin as dark as mine, nose as broad — I feel intensely, irrationally proud. She’s filling hundreds of black girls all over the country with inspiration, giving them permission to dream."(Obaro). This illustrates that Gabby Douglas is giving courage to black girls across the nation and not only is she inspiring them, but giving black girls “permission to dream.”(Obaro). From a very young age Gabby had decided to make her gymnastics career serious, leaving her family to go away and train to be an Olympic Gymnast at the age of fourteen. An example of this is,”Gabby and her family faced economic challenges at home and she made the difficult decision to leave her mother Natalie (King), three siblings and grandmother (Merkerson) in Virginia Beach and move to Des Moines, Iowa, to train with renowned coach Liang Chow (Brian Tee, The Wolverine) to pursue her dream of Olympic glory.”(Warren). This reveals how much dedication Gabby put into gymnastics, even if that meant leaving her family to go train. She also trains all week to get into competitions and events, taking up most of her time. For instance, a reporter says,”Despite firsthand knowledge of all that's gone into shaping those shoulders, including four-to-six-hours-per-day, six-days-per-week workouts like the one she just finished here at Buckeye Gymnastics, Douglas seems almost surprised by her current physique.”(Roenigk). This demonstrates that aside from rigorous training, Gabby also does workouts, to keep her strength. Overall Gabby has put in much dedication to her gymnast life, as shown in the evidence, giving another reason why she is the best gymnast.
Finally, Gabby Douglas is the best gymnast because of her many medals in competitions. Two time olympic medalist, has been winning competitions since her beginning career of gymnastics, letting her hard work pay off. She may not win every single competition, but she wins many, with all of her hard work and accomplishments. Although some may say other gymnasts have also won the olympics, Gabby Douglas was able to do that twice, while inspiring others, something that other gymnasts simply can not do. For example she was the 2012 Olympic team and all around champion and was awarded AP Female Athlete Of the Year.(USA gym). This reveals that not only did she win the Olympics, but also was awarded Female Athlete of the Year! All of this happened in the span of one year, something no other gymnast has ever done.
