Gateway Drug Essay
Is marijuana a “gateway” drug? What do we mean by the “gateway” drug? According to the text, a number of politicians and officials consider marijuana to be a dangerous drug that should be regulated and controlled since it leads to harsher drugs such as heroin cocaine (Spohn & Belenko, 2015, p. 22). Whether or not marijuana is a gateway drug depends on the person and how strong they are. Some people know that they will only smoke marijuana and do not have the urge to try any other drugs. Others may try marijuana first, then want to experiment with other drugs because they are no longer satisfied with the marijuana “high”. In my personal opinion, any drug can be a gateway drug, marijuana is just popular for being called the gateway drug because

Should it be the focus of law enforcement? In my personal opinion, marijuana is not dangerous in terms of health and the wellbeing of others. Although it has posed a number of potential long-term health effects, there is yet to be shown a causal link between lung cancer and smoking marijuana (Spohn & Belenko, 2015, p. 22). According to the text, marijuana was used for various reasons throughout history. For example, it was used to make baskets, clothing, and ropes. How dangerous can it be? And what other drugs can be used to make things of this sort? None that I can think of. Also, marijuana is not dangerous due to the major health benefits it entails. Recently marijuana has been popular in treating epilepsy in children. A group of brothers who own a marijuana plantation created a plant that is used to help and treat seizures and epilepsy (Staff, 2016). The strain named Charlotte’s Web, which contains CBD and less than 0.3 %THC, is named after a little girl that the plant successfully treats (Staff, 2016). Her parents were down to their last resort on finding a cure to decrease if not stop her seizures (Staff, 2016). Now since using the marijuana extract, her seizure were reduced from over a thousand a month to just a handful (Staff,
