Gawad Kalinga
HISTORY OF GAWAD KALINGA
The foundation for Gawad Kalinga was laid on December 26, 1995, when lay Catholic community Couples for Christ held a Youth Camp for gang members and juvenile delinquents in Bagong Silang, Caloocan City, then the largest slum area in the Philippines. The program was organized by CFC – Youth for Christ.
In 1999, the first GK house was built for the Adduru family, also from Bagong Silang.[2] The name "Gawad Kalinga", which translates in the Filipino language either as "to give care" or "to award care," was coined in 2000.
The first GK Expo was launched on October 4, 2003, in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. During this gathering, GK launched a campaign called the GK777 campaign to build 700,000 homes in 7,000 communities for 7 years.
On February 25, 2006, GK launched the Isang Milyong Bayani ("One Million Heroes", also known as GK1MB) program, where volunteers from various nations would donate 4 hours of work per month to assist in GK communities. The program includes an annual event called the GK1MB Bayani Challenge, a one-week national immersion/build activity, where volunteers within the program come together to build homes in a GK community for a week.[3] The Bayani Challenge has been held in Aurora Province and Quezon Province(2006); Albay, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, Marinduque, and Samar (2007); Bukidnon and Lanao del Sur (2008);[5] and Sulu andZamboanga City (2009).
The first Gawad Kalinga Global Summit was held in Boston, Massachusetts, last June 12–14, 2009. During the event, GK launched another feat, a 21-year timeline to end poverty for 5 million families, by providing land for the landless, homes for the homeless and food for the hungry.

DEVELOPMENT MODEL
The first phase of the GK journey sought to achieve Social Justice by raising 700,000 homes and start–up 7,000 communities by the end of 2010. The goal of the campaign called GK 777 is to "un-squat” the poorest of the poor, heal their woundedness, regain their trust, build

David gives us food for thought about engaging in and creating services that are geared towards changing or perhaps saving the less fortunate people that are living in social injustice. Mr. Brooks applauds the people that are excited to make a difference, but lets us know that their efforts are in vain if they think change is possible without the process of politics. David informs us…

In this article Diana George discusses how poverty is misrepresented by Habitats for Humanity and how this adversely affects the organization’s goal, which is to “eliminate poverty housing from the globe” (pg.4). In an effort to attract supporters the organization paints a very obvious picture of what poverty is in their publicity videos. They show people in rags, living in shacks with despair all around them, and suggests that the issue can simply be solved with good-willing volunteers. The problem with this is that it only shows one dimension of poverty which narrows the population’s ideas about what it is. In order to undermine this, Diana George suggests that we “change the face of poverty” because it doesn't just mean lack of material possessions. The poverty in one country may be different from that of another country.…

“Together we can help the poorest of the poor live a life of dignity, free from poverty.” You can help by; hosting a Caritas Kitchen, gather and host a Caritas Ks, donating to Project Compassion, organising your own fundraising event, or joining a sponsored event. Fundraising is also an opportunity to raise awareness about important issues, and a chance for the community to take part in a social justice action. Everyone who contributes is empowered, and able to stand in solidarity with the people for whom they’re raising funds. All the money raised during these fundraising events is used to provide the poorest of the poor all around the world, with facilities that they previously couldn’t afford. Just $5 can provide a tray of seedlings, so a farmer can diversify the crops they grow in their farm in Fiji, and $930 could provide two adult dairy cows for a farmer so his family can generate a stable source of income in Indonesia. $8500 could construct a borehole that would provide 500 households with access to clean water in Malawi, and $570 could provide two days of training for health centre staff so they can share new knowledge about childhood nutrition with local communities in Cambodia.…

In my corner of the world, poverty is present, however many are unaware of those who struggle to make ends meet. This corner of the world is considered the suburbs to many, but to some it is the place they struggle to survive. Just like Samson’s write, “The suburbs seem particularly designed to avoid facing the bigger issues of life” (Samson, 58). The two projects that I ventured out to be apart of were Restore Hope Ministries, and Voice of the Martyrs. These two organizations are truly bringing light to the darkest parts of world, and reaching those who are disenfranchised and on the periphery of society.…

Assisted suicide is the suicide of a patient suffering from an incurable disease, affected by the taking of lethal drugs provided by a doctor for this purpose. I am neither for nor against because I see the pros and cons on this topic, which puts me on the fence. Although if I had to choose a side I would say I am more leaning towards being for assisted suicide. There are times where assisted suicide is acceptable and there are times where it is not. All in all, assisted suicide depends on the situation when deciding if you are for or against the issue.…
