aspires to follow the rules and laws of the Bible. St Vincent De Paul Society founded in 1833 by Blessed Federic Ozanam at the age of 20 who worked with a small number of volunteers: now St Vincent De Paul Society has grown to more than 950,000 members and volunteers, operating in 149 countries. St Vincent De Paul Society, otherwise known as Vinnies, help with giving moral support to all who are in need. Throughout this report, I will assess ways in which St Vincent De Paul Society helps people and explain how it demonstrates compassion as seen in the parable of the Good Samaritan. St Vincent De Paul Society helps in many ways but in this report I will convey the main areas which Vinnies help in, such as housing, children/education and health matters. Luke: 10 25-37. The Parable of the Good Samaritan is a Parable spoken by Jesus, where a man is beaten to the floor and a Priest walks by however does not bother to nurture him, a Levie also walks by but refuses to help him, after which a Samaritan man walks by and looks after him with his own wealth.
Housing for All
More than 105,000 people in Australia are homeless each night suffering from the harsh climate of Australia. St Vincent De Paul is taking action against this problem and as a result, St Vincent De Paul Society created a campaign called “Help us to cut Homelessness, not funding”. This campaign aims to gather funding for the growth of the National Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS) and to commit a long term Housing Agreement in Australia. Vinnies CEO Sleep Out is an awareness program where the Vinnies CEO sleeps in solidarity to show compassion to the homeless (Refer to Image 1).
How does the issue of housing show Compassion and seen in the Parable?
The campaign “Help us to cut Homelessness, not funding” initiated by St Vincent De Paul Society helps the Federal Government to reach out to the homeless within Australia. This act shows compassion towards the homeless people of Australia because St Vincent De Paul Society shows altruism for these people without any reward. In this case, St Vincent De Paul Society is seen as the Good Samaritan for the Homeless. Just like the Good Samaritan sheltered the man, so does St Vincent De Paul Society shelter the homeless.
Children and Education
Studies show that 35.8% of students in remote areas of Australia have not completed Year 10, because of the lack of educational support. St Vincent De Paul Society commits their services to provide educational resources to those who have no access to education. Vinnies engages with kids who suffer hardships or adversity by providing kids with education camps, relaxation programs known as mini vinnies (Refer to Image 2) and homework tutoring. Vinnies also run intervention programs and parenting support for kids, refugees and migrants in need. St Vincent De Paul Society calls on the government to increase the income support by $50 per week so more families can be raised from under the poverty line.
How does the issue of Children and Education show Compassion and seen in the Parable?
Through the volunteering acts of the St Vincent De Paul Society, we are able to link this act to compassion through the bible verse, 1 Peter 4:10 “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of Gods varied grace.” This bible verse states that each person has a gift and they should share it, in this case Vinnies shares the compassion they have with kids who are less fortunate. Just as the Good Samaritan showed compassion to the man, St Vincent De Paul Society share their compassion by reaching out to those kids in need with moral and educational support.
Health Matters
Many Australians throughout Australia who suffer from poverty may also suffer from major health issues.
St Vincent De Paul Society aims to support these types of people who have lack of funding for their health needs (Refer to Image 3); they aim to help people who suffer from mental illness, poor physical health and addiction. Vinnies provide reconnecting programs which help breakdown stigma associated mental illnesses along with creating friends in their own community. The Social Determinants of Health Alliance (SDOHA) focuses on building an alliance between 70 organisations including Vinnies, this alliance promotes health and welfare along with opening new doors to the disadvantaged. St Vincent De Paul encourages volunteers across Australia to get involved in their programs, throughout NSW, ACT, QLD and …show more content…

How does the issue of Health show Compassion and seen in the Parable?
This issue not only focuses on compassion from the parable but it also focuses on Jesus words, Deuteronomy 24:14 “You shall not oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your brothers or one of the sojourners who are in your land within your towns”. This verse states that you should help people who are less fortunate than you are and not to put them down. Vinnies through this act replicates the words of god through their actions towards the less fortunate. Moreover, the compassion shown in this act is identical in the parable as a man helped a less fortunate person who was in need.
In conclusion, St Vincent De Paul Society is a helping hand to all those in need.
They have already done a lot about health, education/children and housing. However it has a further deeper influence on people, which helps them to fully immerse themselves in Compassion as evident in the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Through the campaign “Help us to cut Homelessness, not funding”, St Vincent De Paul Society redefines help to those who need it the most. Furthermore, the programs organised by St Vincent De Paul Society creates an effective and inclusive mind set for the less fortunate and disadvantaged people. The alliance of The Social Determinants of Health Alliance (SDOHA) promotes accurate health and wellbeing to the less fortunate. The bible verses of 1 Peter 4:10 and Deuteronomy 24:14 help redefine and split the Parable of the Good
Samaritan.
