Gay Marriage
Problem-Solution
I. Intro- Is same-sex marriage immoral, bad, illegal, etcetera or is it just a natural born right?
A. Attention getter- We are one nation, under god; born with certain inalienable rights such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of HAPPINESS, right?
B. Thesis- I personally believe in gay marriage, who is anyone to say who can and cannot be together.
C. Tie to audience- Have you ever had a boyfriend or girlfriend and your parents told you that you were not allowed to see that said other person? What if you loved that person? What if you wanted to marry that person and you were told “No”? How would you feel…completely hopeless? That is exactly what gay couples face every day of their lives.
D. Credibility statement- I was raised to be open minded and to know and respect the fact that everybody is different and to love them non-the-less. I believe in freedom and with that come the freedom to choose. Denying gay couples the right to marry, divorce and remarry is in direct violation of the 14th amendment and a complete contradiction to our so called “free” country.
E. Review points- Society and naysayers’ have given several reasons for their stance against same-sex marriage, including ones such as; pro-creation, “morality”, certain political aspects, and the biggest of all religion. However, activist and the rest of society defend gay marriage as our natural and constitutional rights.
II. Body- A. Main Point/1st problem- Is pro-creation a valid reasoning against gay marriage?
1. Evidence- Many say that marriage is to be between, one man and one woman because the only way to further life is by pro-creating. This yes, is true. However it is not taken into consideration that there are children being born every day that are being aborted and given up for adoption by men and women who have pro created. Yet you do not see gay couples recklessly creating and destroying lives. Still, when the topic of gay marriage comes about it is argued that, two consenting “gay” adults cannot pro-create therefore they should not have the right to marry. Since a marriage is only established to create children, right? And couldn’t be just for the sole purpose of love for one another?
2. Evidence- B. 2nd problem – Another argument against gay marriage is one made from a political stance. 1. Evidence- For example, if you are running for the Governor of a very religious, conservative state you are not going to be in support of things such as abortion or gay marriage, right? In order to win you want to target your majority audience. When you do get a candidate who is openly in support of these issues, in such a state, he/she is most likely to lose because he is in support of everything the majority is against. Simply put nobody wants to take a stand for an issue in which they know is right because winning is more important than the overall morality of doing the right thing. 2. Evidence- However there are some big political figures that do openly support gay marriage. Since Obama’s presidency started in 2008, he has served as a huge activist in the battle for gay marriage Obama even went as far as suspending the rule of “don’t ask, don’t tell”. In the more recent 2012 elections democrat Tammy Baldwin became the first ever openly gay U.S. senator.
C. 3rd problem- The biggest, if not most influential, case against gay marriage is religion.
1. Evidence- Though, it is clearly stated in the 1st amendment, that a person’s religious views or lack thereof must be protected. Christians, on the other hand are firm believers in support of “gods” disapproval of gay marriage. By doing so they are assuming that what church teaches about marriage and the expression of sexual desire to be true. However, if god loves all of his children, then why would he not because of their sexual preference. Christian’s idea of a traditional marriage is between one man and one woman but the point of gay marriage is not to challenge the word of god or to go against religion, it is simply to pursue the right to happiness. D. Solution- This is where we make our case, and it all revolves around our amendment rights. Under Proposition eight of the fourteenth amendment; due process prohibits states and national government from denying our rights to life, liberty, and property without steps being taken to ensure fairness . It was understood that “all men are created equal,” is it not the same understanding that a homosexual marriage and a heterosexual marriage are allowed equal rights as well. The overall best decision in the handling of gay marriage would just be to make it legal, in all fifty states. The fairest conclusion to same-sex marriage is legalization. We cannot be a completely free country, if we do not have the right to choose who our partners can and cannot be, anything less of that would be hypocritical. Yes, the “majority” will have a huge problem with legalization of gay marriage…..at first. Do you think the “majority” wanted to end slavery? No, but with time the issues they had dissolved.
III. Conclusion (short)
A. Review Point- My purpose is not to bash the government or religion, but simply to rally for equal opportunities and equal marriage rights for everyone no matter what their age, gender, race or sexuality. Because when it comes down to it you can’t help who you fall in love with, but there can be something done about who you can and cannot marry.
B. Restate thesis- I completely and fully agree with gay marriage and gay couples being entitled all the rights in a relationship as straight couples are.
C. Restate your opinion or message- I believe gay marriage should be legalized in all fifty states, because the only way to be a truly “free” country is to allow everyone their freedom to choose, regardless of sexual preference. Once, you take away the reason to say who is right or wrong, by making an overall decision, you take away the whole reason gay marriage is an issue in the first place. Simply put if you have no fuel, you have no fire.

The stereotypical depictions of these characters are essential to Gray and Ice Cube’s critique of the usual portrayals of the hood. They cannot be on the same level as our protagonists because they are reflective of what is wrong with the community. Therefore, they are depicted in a negative light using comedic tactics. Big Worm is a parody of drug dealers. While drug dealers are known to be “tough” looking, Big Worm is a fat man either driving a bright colored vehicle with curlers in his hair or driving an ice cream truck with an unusually large perm. There is absolutely nothing threatening when looking at the character of Big Worm yet he is one of the most feared people in the neighborhood. Deebo, on the other hand, is depicted as brawn but…

For the past thousand years, marriage has been recognized as the social union between a man and a woman. In most cultures across the globe, homosexuality was viewed with disdain and marriages between same sex couples were forbidden. Individuals against gay marriage insist the act is indecent, and permitting same-sex marriage will raise the separation rates. In addition, those against gay marriage imply that gays and lesbians are prone to spoil the long-standing practice marriage between a man and a woman. A further contention displayed by the defenders of gay marriage originates from the conviction that the real motivation behind marriage is reproduction. Gay marriage does not reinforce this conviction and should not wed, adopt or bring up kids.…

If you had a child that grew up to love someone of the same sex, and wanted you to acknowledge their love for each other by being at their wedding, would you? Unfortunately, many Americans would sadly answer no to this question even when it involves their own child and his or her biological makeup. Marriage has been traditionally viewed as a religious and legal commitment between a man and a woman, as well as the ultimate expression of love. Homosexual relationships are continuously gaining acceptance throughout the country, however, many states still do not permit these couples to marry. Many same-sex couples want the right to legally marry, and honor their relationship publicly to represent their love for each other despite what others opinions may be. Whether you refer to it as marriage equality, gay marriage, or same-sex marriage, they all represent the same thing: extending the freedom to marry, along with the rights and protections that opposite-sex married couples are entitled to, to same-sex couples through the act of civil marriage. As a nation known for our peace, equality, and freedom, there should be no limitations or laws that prohibit same-sex couples from having the same marriage rights as everyone else.…

Alcohol and the many uses of it have evolved throughout history. Since the beginning of time alcohol has impacted all different types of cultures and has shown the world how ambiguous a substance can be. In 1920 the 18th Amendment banning the sale, manufacture, and transport of alcohol was passed. This was called Prohibition. Prohibition was supposed to decrease crime, death rate due to alcohol abuse, and the overall consumption of alcohol. Prohibition was a failure because it did the opposite of everything is was supposed to prevent.…

This argument considers the rights of every person regardless of his or her sexual preference. Shell, (2004), writes “the issue of gay marriage can be reduced to the question of whether the desired union between homosexuals is more like a marriage between heterosexuals” (p. 1). Homosexual’s marriages seek the essence of marriage, in general as described above in a basic sense. A beginning step to define an approach to marriage is to discover methods that help individuals understand marriage. The similarity would be a human situation that simultaneously has a reasonable impartiality concerning respect to present-day conflicts such as homosexual’s marriages. Many people respect the concept of marriage, and acknowledge secure relationships; whether a man and a woman or same sex partners. The pros and cons are unbiased views that demonstrate the laws and civil rights for everyone. For example, disallowing marriage for gay couples or rejecting marriages for gay couples are mostly a religious belief. An example,…

I chose to use this assignment as an opportunity to discuss my viewpoints on gay marriage with my wife. We tend to agree on most other subjects and really feed off of each other’s opinions and beliefs, so I thought maybe this assignment would help shine some light on why exactly we disagree. And maybe more importantly, which one of us is right (ha-ha-ha). I think it’s important to mention that we both come from very similar backgrounds. Having grown up only a few houses from each other, having the same amount of siblings, and same friends, not much about our upbringing differed. Except, that is, for the fact that I grew up in a deeply religious home. I attended church two to three times a week, participated in various church activities, and read the bible with my dad at least once a week.…

Marriage is known to be a foundation between a man and a women and if two of the same sex are unified, individuals view that as wrong. Relationships of the same sex are often referred to being immoral and a social experiment. Some religions feared that if gay marriage became legal that the churches would be forced to marry gay couples at their will. After researching this specific topic, I truly believe that it is safe to say that the pros outweigh the cons in this discuss in my own belief. As well as in my opinion, I feel that as long as there is peace, love will be found. If we the people chose to abide by the Constitution than that is what needs to happen. People will forever have their own opinions but if others are happy it should not matter if it does not affect you or your life. Gay marriage was legalized and though individuals think that is wrong on the Constitutions part, they need to realize that we are America the free and even if the same genders are allowed to marry, we are still free as a…

Gay marriages have been one of the hottest and controversial topics in our society. There are still problems concerning this issue of homosexuality and gay marriages. Same sex marriages are legal in Hawaii, but in all other states couples must be of the opposite sex to form a marriage. Hawaii’s decision to legalize same sex marriages is considered a milestone victory for gays and may cause a ripple affect for similar action in other states. Those who support gay marriages justify their position by the concept of love. These supporters of gay marriages feel as though gay people are being deprived of their right to love. Many people believe that gay people deserve the right to love and to take that love and form a marriage. These people believe that gays want to feel justified, meaning that as a couple they should be able to define their own marriage for themselves and make their own set of rules. Supports of same-sex marriages feel as though homosexuals are being deprived of their God given right to get married. They believe that arguments against same sex marriages are unconstitutional, and they simply do not justify a ban on same sex marriages. It is not the idea of two people of the same sex getting married that frightens people so much, but it is the thought of change and the fact that the federal government will redefine marriage to allow same sex unions. When people picture the results of same sex marriages, they see images of unstable homes. Everyone would probably agree that homosexuality has changed our society, and legalizing same sex marriages is not likely to be an exception. It would be an injustice to discriminate against a person if he or she were…

I have always taken pride in the fact that I was born American. In grade school, every morning we would rise for our country’s Pledge of Allegiance. I remember I would always be so overcome with pride; namely, “one nation, under god, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” What exactly does liberty and justice for all mean? Liberty is defined as the state of being free within a society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life (Dictionary.com). The definition of justice is as follows: the quality of being just; righteousness, equitableness, or moral rightness (Dictionary.com). These two, very powerful words can be found in our country’s Pledge of Allegiance but are they found in our society? Banning gay marriage is directly against the constitution and the pledge America knows verbatim, violating the unalienable right to the pursuit of happiness. The Constitution was written to protect each and every individual from “oppressive restrictions.” The Constitution itself promises the right to pursue happiness. The United States of America has been known throughout history as a place of freedom and courage and our pledge clearly states this.…

Same-sex marriage is the Civil Rights Movement of our time. Same-sex marriage is also a big controversial topic. Over the course of history the majority of the people in the country have been against it, but it has change in flavor to supporting same-sex marriage. So far nine states have made it legal, and hopefully more to come. Same-Sex marriage couples should have the same rights as traditional married couples because it is illegal. They deserve their rights, it is immoral, and it brings economic benefits to them.…

There are a numerous amount of reasons as to why people oppose gay marriage, but basically it comes down to an absolute infringement on the civil liberties of homosexuals. The most basic argument for the opposition to gay marriage is the simple statement ?Marriage is an institution between one man and one woman.? I would like to know who is to decide what marriage is and isn?t. The married? Politicians? The Bible? Isn?t freedom of religion also freedom from religion? Somehow the ?Bible? assertion always seems to arise into modern political debates. I want to know whatever happened to separation from religion and state. I want to know when white male Christians are going to realize that there are many other religions, races, and sexual orientations out there other than their own. In fact, Scott Bidstrup cleverly states, ?many sects of Buddhist celebrate gay relationships freely and would like to have the authority to make them legal marriages. In that sense, their religious freedom is being infringed.? Although, the Bible argument should immediately be dicounted, even if we were to survey the text, who is to interpret the statements. ?People in the late 1800s and early 1900s justified the exploitation of slaves claiming that the Bible clearly showed Gods support for it. Now people are saying that they can clearly see Gods condemnation of gays.? (Silver 64) For a moment, branching off from the marriage topic, I?d like to just…

permitting gays and lesbians to marry threatens the institution of marriage?” This concludes that Katha Pollitt obviously has the mind-set that same-sex marriage is acceptable and should be allowed and, clearly, she does not see a problem with it. Gay marriage has been the cause of intense debate in the United States for years. Sexual activity within the same gender was something that was considered normal in Greek and Roman times but in today’s society, there is a great amount of controversy concerning sexual activity between homosexuals and same-sex marriage. A couple of reasons why gay marriage has become so controversial is because of religion, the issue of procreation, and the concern for children who are raised in same sex house-holds. Although there are a great deal of people who find gay marriage to be considered a negative idea, there is also a significant amount of people who are for gay marriage and would like gay marriage to be legal in the United States. According to The Associated Press 3/27/13, a “Pew Research Center poll” that took place in March shows that the number of people in America who approve gay marriage are up to forty-nine percent and there is forty-four percent of people who do not approve (par.6). These percentages show that both sides of opinion come close in number and when there is a great amount of differences in opinion on one given subject, conflict will certainly arise.…
