Gay Marriage… Legalize It? Breaking news in New York… Another riot has broken out today at Central Park when a groups or Christians protested the passing of gay marriage laws. All was peaceful, until an opposing group of homosexuals and homosexual/bisexual supporters noticed the protest and began to preach to the same crowd of the beauty of homosexuality and its ability of marriage. Then the chaos began. Situations like this are very common throughout the nation. The concept of gay marriage has, and still till this day, affect of society immensely. This leaves the government with the question “Should gay marriage be legalized?” Deciding whether to legalize is very controversial matter because they’re many in society who feel as though gay marriage is wrong and others who feel that is it right. Supporters to this cause will argue that gay marriage should be legalized because marriage is a union between two people that love each other, which shouldn’t be limited to only heterosexual couples, but open to all; non supporters will argue that marriage is a sacred event held in the church with a bishop and according to the Bible, homosexuality is an abomination, therefore it shouldn’t be legalized. The notion of gay marriage began in the early 1970s. It began “when lesbian and gay couples applied for marriage licenses, asked the court to allow one partner to adopt the other, and took other steps to cement their relationship” (Burns 15), but their attempts failed. However, lesbians and gays did not lose hope. Later in the 1980s, they began to put their failed efforts binding their relationship and began the fight to retrieve domestic partnership. Domestic partnership is relationship where two individuals living together, but not married or under a civil union. In Nov. 2003, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that barring same-sex couples from civil marriage was unconstitutional
