With the beginning of the new millennium, the entry of females into managerial positions has raised a lot of controversies about their management styles and that they rely more on intuition rather than statistics or systematical data. However, until this day the gender-based conflict about management style remains unsolved.
Aim
This paper aims to report the results of a systematically conducted literature review of studies about gender differences in management styles. The main research question was: What are the differences between male and female managers regarding their management style.
Management Styles:
Autocratic manager: An autocratic manager means that the manager makes decisions unilaterally, excluding his\her subordinates opinions. This style will result in decisions that reflect the manager and his\her personality and may cause subordinate’s inefficiency and dependency upon their manager for guidance and instructions.
Bureaucratic manager: A bureaucratic manager means that the manager leads subordinates and makes his\her decisions based on regulations, rules, and procedures. This style will result in subordinates consider their manager as police officer who make sure that the procedures, regulation, and rules are being followed.
Democratic (participative) manager: A democratic manager is basically the opposite of an autocratic manager, meaning that he\she seeks subordinates thoughts, opinions, and suggestions in order to resolve a problem or to make a decision.
Laissez-faire (hands-off) manager: A laissez-fair manager delegates decision-making authority to subordinates in order to solve problems and achieve goals. This style is more likely to work efficiently when the subordinates are skilled and experienced.
