On college campuses today, male professors are afraid to be behind closed doors with female students because this could lead to accusations of sexual harassment. Male professors are therefore left to forge bonds of friendship with only male students. This being the case, it is in fact the female student who…

Through work to bring materials from women's studies into the rest of the curriculum, I have often noticed men's unwillingness to grant that they are overprivileged, even though they may grant that women are disadvantaged. They may say they will work to women's statues, in the society, the university, or the curriculum, but they can't or won't support the idea of lessening men's. Denials that amount to taboos surround the subject of advantages that men gain from women's disadvantages. These denials protect male privilege from being fully acknowledged, lessened, or ended.…
Gender roles are an increasing topic in society. From joining the military to walking down the street men and women everywhere have been fighting for equal rights for all genders. Before I talk about that though, I want to talk about the effect that traditional gender roles have had on society today. Throughout the years of mankind, it has been implied that the man of a relationship is in charge. This may be true for some people and that in fine and dandy, but what if your wife or daughter wants to be a politician or a lawyer. Traditionally the man works and the wife cleans, cooks, teaches, and takes care of the children.…
What images come to mind when you hear the words masculinity and femininity? According to Michael S. Kimmel (2000), an American sociologist, specializing in gender studies, “… the concept of masculinity is produced within the institutions of society and through our daily interactions” (p 110). From all the advertisements we see on television to the models that appear on the magazines we read, in recent years there has been much discussion on how women feel as though they have a particular stereotype to live up to. Despite this being true, according to Jackson Katz, women are not alone in feeling pressure to fit a certain gender mold. San Jose State University is often celebrated for the rich diversity in the campus community. The meanings of…
Biology alone determines whether a person is female or male, not culture, but cultural myths outline the roles women and men play in society. These cultural myths constitute to the lack of differentiation between sex and gender, imposing the idea of nature versus nurture. While one is born either female or male due to biology, one’s culture ultimately makes one into a woman or a man. Society has predisposed images of what it means to be feminine or masculine. These gender roles limit the individual’s potential, making humans into performers that must conform to their “appropriate” roles. Being a man should not rely on appearing dominant, aggressive, or never admitting to weaknesses, nor should a woman’s life depend on her reproductiveness…
Gender roles are associated with the norms, or standards that are created by society. These roles have surpassed the expectations of what our grandparents and ancestors were accustomed to. Men are viewed as strong, aggressive, and dominant; while women are viewed as nurturing, passive, and subordinate. The changes have impacted the world in great form by defying the odds in household duties, education, and work.…
What exactly is a standard? According to Webster's dictionary, a standard is a level of quality or excellence that is accepted as the norm or by which actual attainments are judged. Standards are created because someone believes that a fair and efficient form of doing something is necessary. The military is full of these standards. One of the most widely known is the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT). It tests the maximum amount of push-ups and sit-ups a person can do in two minutes. Along with completing a two-mile run in the allotted time prescribed. The APFT is different from any other standardized test I have ever seen. It is painfully obvious that the test is severely skewed in the females favor.…
Traditional gender roles have existed for many centuries. Throughout the history of humanity among various cultures and eras, there are pieces of evidence and traces of unfair treatment of women. Women have a role of a wife waiting for her husband to return from the war, a mother of the conquering hero or a great scientist, or a daughter who is destined to marry the prince of another country in order to consolidate the alliance between the two countries. Life of a woman was determined by the man, whether it be her father, husband or son. It is not surprising that such a position in society led women to fight. Starting with the suffragettes and finishing with the third wave, feminism has become an integral part of the society. Women opened…

There were a few television shows that reinforce the traditional gender roles assigned to both men and woman. “I Love Lucy”, “The Jeffersons”, “Goodtimes”, “All in the Family”, “My Wife and Kids”, and “Fresh Prince of Bell Air” were all traditional gender role television shows. All of these shows had the men working and the women were taking care of everything at home. “The Jeffersons” were a little different than the rest because they had Florence there to do all of the housework and Mrs. Jefferson didn’t do much at all around the house unless she wanted to of course. Another show was “The Brady Bunch” this show was also different from the rest because although they had Alice there to help Ms. Brady because she had a lot of children, she still did a lot of house work herself. There are some movies that have traditional roles which are “Love and Basketball”, “Cheaper by the Dozen”, “Premonition”, and “Coming to America” are all movies were the husband works and the wife is home taking care of the family and the house. Although in the movie “Cheaper by the Dozen” the wife does write a book but realizes that her role as a stay at home is very important because when she went on her book tour she realized that the father could not handle working full time and taking care of a household full time was a lot more than he could handle. There were also a few cartoons that have traditional gender roles as well. “The Flintstones”, “The Jetsons”, and “The Simpsons” although they are cartoons as mentioned earlier they are show how the man works to provide for their families but the woman are the care takers of the family. There was in an article in the “Australian Journal of Psychology” called Gender and race portrayal in children’s picture books: An analysis of recent Caldecott Medal winners. The article states that, “This research investigates recent Caldecott Medal winning children s picture books. Seventeen books are evaluated through the examination of central…
Gender roles are expectations of how a person should act, dress, and talk based on his or her sex. A majority of people conform to these roles at an early age, and will continue to carry these beliefs, often unconsciously, around with them throughout their lives, and these beliefs can affect people negatively. The message that gender roles send is that in order to be part of society, you must fit into the predisposed mold for your gender, or most importantly, what society deems as acceptable. But at the same time, try to incorporate individuality and establish a sense of self.…

conformity is “a change in behavior or belief to accord with others” (Myers, 2013). In this article from the Wall Street Journal, talks about men and women in the worke place, how they complete the same assignments and have the same colleges, but end up having different experiences. Conformity is usually based differenty towards that of women and men. Due to the fact that women, are usually viewed to have the experience harder than men. Even when it comes to the Superior position and how Obedience and acceptance is viewed differently from a male supervisor than that of a female supervisor. First hand i expericed this at my old job, where we had both a male and a female supervisor. The male supervior would give orders and the conformity was…
