Gender Relations in Classical India
From the beginning of time civilization has hindrance and progressed. In early times, one can see how a male caveman were dominate over women. Even today in some societies these same rules apply where man dominate women. Although the Indian caste system had a religious basis and a difference of gender inequality part of civilization has not progressed. First, the religion in India was based on two religions, that of Hinduism and Buddhism. These two were the most important decision makers of gender structure between man and woman. Women were considered inferior, they had no rights to anything not even themselves. Women had to honor and be obedient to their husbands in every aspect of life. “A girl …show more content…
With time women in India lost every right in inheriting property and were also not allowed to study any religious texts. They were part of the lowest class in society. Another form where a woman in India had to be submissive to her husband was when the husband died, she had to literally commit “sati” which was where a woman had to throw herself be burned and cremated on her husband’s pyre. This was considered a way for a woman to keep herself pure, if she refused society would shun her socially. In conclusion, gender factors in Classical India and in some parts of today’s society have not progressed at all. One can still see this kind of treatment in parts of society where women have no rights in society much less for herself. It is hard to imagen that women have struggled and are still struggling with these kinds of treatments. It is time that women are considered equal to men in every aspect of life and in all parts of the
