| Genentech | Ranked 68th Best | |
68th place can be viewed from two different perspectives. When an athlete or a race car driver is ranked 68th at an event, it tells the spectators that there are 67 other participants who are better. In the business world 68 is a very good number. Fortune Magazine ranked Genentech Company as the 68th Best Company to Work For in 2012 out of the 280 firms polled. If put in perspective of an athletic event then there are 67 other companies that ranked better and over 200 firms that ranked lower than Genentech.
Fortune Magazine and Great Place to Work Institute conduct a yearly survey that is considered the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. In 2012 280 companies requested to be a part of this survey which led to more than 246,000 employees of those companies participating. To be considered for this survey the company much be at least five years old, have more than 1,000 U.S. employees and apply before the yearly set deadline at www.greatplacetowork.com; for the 2012 list the deadline was July 1, 2012 and for the 2013 list the deadline is July 1, 2013.
Genentech is honored to have the ranking of 68th as shown on their website. A link on the company’s main page takes the reader to Genentech’s awards page. There it shows how the company has ranked in the top 100 companies for 14 consecutive years. What gets a company to be ranked as part of the 100 Best Places to Work? There are many different areas that are studied to include pay, health benefits, work-life, and perks. So what put Genentech on the radar and kept them there, you ask? Genentech offers a six-week fully paid sabbatical every six years of employment. That is not the only perk but a fully paid sabbatical is one that has stuck out among many employees.
