This phobia can cause people to avoid public places and large groups of people. The daily lifestyle is compromised by the fear of places such as, streets, stores, restaurants and public transportation. Often this disorder progresses to a point where the individual will not leave his or her home. A person is more likely to develop this disorder if it is embedded in their family genetics. However, women are four times more likely as men to be diagnosed (Wood, et al., 2011, p. 363).
Social Anxiety Disorder
A person with social anxiety disorder has an irrational fear of social situations which he or she develops a strong avoidance. One might fear he or she will humiliate or embarrass oneself in front of others, or cause people to think poorly of them. Through daily activities such as, talking, eating, writing, or speaking, individuals with this phobia believe that people are judging them. Research has should that about one third of those with this disorder fear only speaking in public and those with the disorder have a higher incidence of drug use (Wood, et al., 2011, p. 363).
