An is a ten year old, Caucasian, female, from a lower-middle class family that consists of herself and her two biological parents. She attends fourth grade at a local public elementary school where she has an individualized educational plan (IEP) to assist her in reading, writing, and math. An looks to her mother and teacher for the majority of her social support. An is involved in multiple activities; she plays clarinet in the school band, is active in a girl scout troup, and on the cheer team at school. An also enjoys spending time with her friends, but has been assessed by a licensed therapist as being behind her peers in hr socializations. One hypothesis for her social delay is its potential relationship to her learning delay.

Her complaints included a sense of fear and becoming overwhelmed when she was unexpectedly called upon in school or when she had to make a presentation. An’s mother reported that An became nauseous, overwhelmed, and would sometimes faint. The symptoms would often be severe enough that An would miss school. The mother further reported that An has a compulsion to know what is happening. When plans change or she does not understand what will happen next, An experiences symptoms of agitation, uncontrolled crying, hyperventilation, and the inability to think clearly.
