However, this issue developed from the attempts of humans trying to control nature for their own benefit. The effects of man trying to dominate the environment are represented in the short story, “The Sea Devil" by Arthur Gordon. The main character of the story goes out at night to fish because he enjoys the feeling of supremacy that fishing engenders, “He liked being the hunter, skilled and solitary….” (Gordon 1). This quote reveals the man’s notion of having superiority. Later on in the story, the character became overconfident of his abilities and tried to catch two mullets at once, but instead became roped to a giant ray, “… instinct told him that the net was wide enough…if he could alter the direction of his cast” (Gordon 3). Indeed, the man’s arrogance caused his own failure. He later managed to escape and realize his mistake, “He knew one thing. He…would do no more casting alone at night” (Gordon 6). As illustrated, the man learned the errors of his behavior. In conclusion, the man in the story thought of himself as having dominance over nature because he is a human, but his pride almost cost him his life when he became chained to a giant ray.
