In the beginning of both the poem and story the authors give a very visual description of the women. They are both considered to appear on the outside as if they are "a faerys child" - beautiful. But when you look into their eyes a sense of being "wild" is within them. The wildness that the men see in their eyes foreshadows their merciless nature. The wildness alludes to and foreshadows the womens animalistic and heartless actions. In both storys the women seduce multiple men with their physical attractiveness in order to gain control of them and make the situation benefit them. The authors use imagery in their texts by explaining in detail the womens outstanding physical features in order to make the reader picture the women in the same way that the narrator does. Steinbeck and Keats effectivly project the images of the women into the minds of the reader.…
To explore the relationships between the women in this scene, the status of each character at different points could be considered. Looking at the extract from page 9 to 19, I would ask the performers to pick a section and read through the lines, deciding the order of each characters’ status. To do this, they could use levels to assert their character’s dominance in the scene. For example, the women of the lowest rank could kneel on the floor and the highest could stand on a chair. This would benefit the performers as the exploration of status would indicate the differences in the character’s personalities and how the position of status changes throughout the scene.…
In “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, directed by Howard Hawks, Anita Loos uses the vapidity of her main female character Lorelei Lee as a satirical reflection of the shallowness of the men which surround her. Specifically, Lorelei is portrayed as being superficially focused on material wealth, while the men who want her are represented as being equally superficial in their interest in her physical beauty. In a broader sense, Loos used the background of upper-class America in the Jazz Age as an object of ridicule. The concept of the ‘gold-digger’ was manifested in the character of the blonde Lorelei Lee which gives insight in how blonde women were perceived during that time period. When it was written in 1925, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, by Anita Loos was heralded as a tremendous novel. It was seen as cutting edge and insightful, yet somewhat risqué in its portrayal of Lorelei Lee and her escapades. I can see how this may have been thought at that time, seeing as how women were looked at in such a different way then they are currently. The fact that a women with as little know-how as Lorelei can manipulate men the way that she does, leaves no question as to who is the superior gender in Loos' mind. While the books is quite amusing, and does have many strengths, if it is looked at in the context of women's struggles with issues such as domesticity, sexuality and socioeconomic standing it seems less and less like such a brilliant, satirical social commentary.…

In the Cult of True Womanhood, women are supposed to follow the four cardinal virtues: piety, purity, submissiveness, and domesticity (Welter). With these four cardinal virtues men had a better understanding on the way women were supposed to behave. In A&P there are three girls that walk into the store. Sammy is immediately captivated by the girls. He gives each one a name, he names them Chunky, Queenie and Plaid. Sammy is head over heels for Queenie she is the prettiest one out of the three. He describes her with having two scoops of vanilla and her bathing suit straps hanging off her pale shoulders. Lengel see how Sammy reacts to seeing the girls and he doesn’t stand for hit. Sammy is so captivated by these girls that he rings up a costumer’s item twice, from not paying attention. The girls walk up to Sammy’s register and Lengel steps in and begins to scold the girls. Lengel tells the girls they must be decently dressed when they come into the store. He tells them that their shoulders must be covered, and that their bathing suits in unacceptable to wear in the store. The girls broke all the rules of the 1960’s when they walked into the store like that. They did not follow the four cardinal virtues of the Cult of True Womanhood. That’s when Lengel had to put his foot down and step up as the male figure and the government and lay down the policies for the girls. He put them back in their place as women when he scolded them. The girls tried to argue their piece a little bit before being shut down again.…
