Geoffrey Pullum Being An Interjection Summary
In Geoffrey Pullum's article "Being an Interjection", language in the form of symbols is discussed. Indeed, the five new "reaction emojis" Facebook has added in 2016 as a way of responding to a status or image have taken Pullum's interest. According to him, the emojis' lack of grammar or syntax makes them interjections which would reduce the human language to a lesser language, similar to the grunts of animals. Furthermore, Pullum explains that although emojis are used to communicate, they do not necessarily "have anything to do with language" (2016). It is again the lack of grammatical complexity that leaves emojis in themselves unable to form sentences in the human language, as stated by the author.

There are two types of assessment, formal and informal. During an informal assessment, e.g. during an observation while carrying out their duties, the candidate may not be aware that they are being assessed. A trainer may use a number of different methods in these types of assessment, below are some examples:…

While speech involves the physical motor ability to talk, language is a symbolic, rule governed system used to convey a message. In English, the symbols can be words, either spoken or written. We also have gestural symbols, like shrugging our shoulders to indicate “I don’t know” or waving to indicate “Bye Bye” or the raising of our eye brows to show that we are surprised by something.…
